Finance Director (Remote, Part Time)

Jacaranda Health is a fast-growing US- and Kenya-based nonprofit working to ensure that all women and their families have access to safe, respectful maternal and newborn healthcare. We partner with the government to roll out innovative programs that improve outcomes health in public health systems.  We are now working with over 200 hospitals serving ~700,000 women and across Kenya, and are scaling our impact to a national level and exploring expansion to other countries. Please visit www.jacarandahealth.org for more details. We have built a world-class team, developed critical partnerships and support within Kenya, and sparked the interest of the global maternal health community.

We have a small remote team in the US supporting a team of 70+ in Kenya, and we have an energetic, cross-cultural spirit.  We are seeking an experienced nonprofit finance professional to advise and oversee our US-based financial management.

As we grow beyond a $5M budget, our nonprofit finances have become more complicated, consolidating financials across several entities, and juggling multiple restricted accounts, including funders with complex reporting and compliance standards such as USAID and the Gates Foundation. We have a strong finance team consisting of a Finance Manager in the US and two CPAs in Kenya. We are looking to bring in some senior executive support to help us build our financial systems and team as we grow.

We are seeking someone with significant experience managing finances for a mid-sized or larger US nonprofit with a global footprint like ours. This is a part-time opportunity 30-50% time – it would be a good fit for someone looking for a part-time commitment, or potentially a fractional CFO with significant bandwidth.

This is your opportunity to use your business and organizational skills for a bold new challenge: to dramatically improve maternal health care in Africa. You will report to our co-Executive Director in the US, and work hand in hand with our Kenya-based leadership and finance teams, and our US-based Board Treasurer.

Responsibilities

Mentor and build capacity in our 4-5 person finance team in Kenya and the US

Oversee building out a robust set of financial processes and SOPs for the organization

Drive financial calendars: ensure timely coordination of monthly reporting and dashboards, regulatory filings, etc.

Support our Finance Manager to refine our monthly consolidated financial reports and dashboards for the executive team and board.

Together with the executive team, help us refine our annual budgeting and forecasting cycle.

Ensure that our management of grant funds is efficient and accurate: improving processes for developing grant budgets, salary allocations, grant budget/actuals, and management of restricted vs unrestricted funds.

Coordinate the preparation for our first federal single audit next year.

Lead negotiations around US Government funds - NICRA, contracts, financial reporting, etc.

At the end of the day, accountable to the executive team and the board for U.S. and Kenya financial operations.

Desired Skills and Experience

Qualifications:

Nonprofit finance and accounting background of at least 10 years with US nonprofit organizations.

Deep fluency with Excel and building tools for insight, dashboards, and budget management

Experience with Quickbooks and Quickbooks Online (which we use in house), and preferably exposure to other accounting systems such as Sage Intaact (which we might grow into)

Experience / exposure managing a financial system migration

Preferred: some experience with USAID and government funding

BS or BA degree required, CPA or MBA experience preferred

Location and Hours:

Our US team of two is in Durham, NC, but this position can be remote, anywhere in the US.
