Organizational Setting

The objective of the Department of Nuclear Energy is to foster the efficient and safe use of nuclear power by supporting interested Member States in improving the performance of nuclear power plants, the nuclear fuel cycle, and the management of nuclear wastes; in catalysing innovation in nuclear power and fuel cycle technologies; in developing indigenous capabilities for national energy planning; in deploying new nuclear power plants; in preserving and disseminating nuclear information and knowledge; and in advancing science and industry through improved operation of research reactors.


Main Purpose

Under the supervision of the NE Communication Adviser, the Associate Communication Officer supports the implementation of NE's internal and external communication strategies. Tasks include drafting and editing, support to the preparation of official documents, text and picture research, event organization and exhibition coordination, web story drafting, social media posting, web videography, support to stakeholder coordination activities, provision of communication-related support to DDG-NE and NE staff, and response to inquiries, among others.



The Associate Communication Officer is (1) a communicator, in constant contact with NE programme stakeholders in support of outreach and information sharing; (2) a writer/researcher, drawing together information from a variety of sources and shaping it into outreach products for a range of media, including audiovisual; and (3) an analyst and early adopter, monitoring communication trends and supporting the extension of NE outreach activities into these fields.


Functions / Key Results Expected

Research, draft and edit texts for a range of outreach materials, including brochures, flyers, exhibition material, briefing notes, background press material, etc.

Draft stories and photo essays for the NE website, conduct and edit interviews with IAEA staff and external stakeholders, help manage the NE Twitter account.

Support the preparation of speeches, official documentation and presentations, in particular with regards to editing and consistency.

Provide support to the staff of NE in a range of communications areas, such as editing, picture research, advice on outreach activities, taking of event photographs, etc.

Assist in the organization of outreach events such as workshops, exhibitions and press conferences, and support internal communication.

Support the implementation of the NE internal and external communication strategies.

Support NE activities assisting Member States on stakeholder engagement for nuclear power programmes and other nuclear facilities.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

University degree in Communication, Journalism or a closely related area;

Minimum of two years of relevant experience, ideally with some exposure to the international field.

Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.




The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $48805 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 23524, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
