Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Electrical and Machine Shop under the Electrical Unit (EU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports to the General Foreperson and the Lead Mechanic of the Electrical Unit.

The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.

Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Foreperson and direct supervision of the Working Leader of the Electrical and Machine Shop, the incumbent shall perform the following duties and responsibilities:

-Maintenance and repair of automated door systems, rolling doors, and door hardware, including vendor oversight functions.
-Repairs and maintenance, including contractor supervision of security barrier systems.
-Respond to service calls; investigate complaints by performing inspection of the area, make necessary adjustments, repair and/or replace defective controls and other associated equipment, and report to the supervisor as required.
-Perform welding repairs of equipment and structural components of the building, ensure the safety of occupants of the UN facilities during all maintenance, repair and installation works.
-Fabricate custom parts and equipment.
-Fabricate and install security cages and other construction activities requiring expertise in welding as required.
-Follow work procedures and schedules; record work time and materials used for work orders; and assist in basic data entry and processes assigned work orders generated from the Computerized System (iNeed).
-Use materials and equipment efficiently, maintain inventory records of equipment, tools, and materials used for maintenance activities; assist in verifying the level of stocks regularly and request approval for ordering spare parts.
-Perform other duties as required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent technical school diploma is required.

Job - Specific Qualification

A technical or vocational certificate in Welding, Machinery, Mechanic, Tool Maker, or related trade is desirable. Please attach your certificate to your application if applicable.

A NYC Certificate of Fitness for Torch Use of Flammable Gases for Hot Work Operations is desirable. Please attach your certificate to your application if applicable.

Work Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of work experience as a Machinist, Mechanic, or related trade, including experience in the use of hand power tools related to the trade is required.

Experience as a NYC Licensed Welder is desirable.

Experience in the maintenance and repair of electronic control systems is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year.

Physical requirements: The Machinist makes repairs and installation from ladders, scaffolds and platforms, which require the incumbent to work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Physical requirements include the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations, frequent walking, standing, sitting, bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching and loading/unloading materials and equipment from storage to job sites. Frequently lift materials weighing up to 40 lbs.

Condition of the workplace: Machine shops are usually noisy. Constant danger to the skin and eyes from flying metal chips, abrasive particles, and hot metal. Skin irritation is possible from contact, lubricants, and abrasive compounds. Danger of being injured from cutting tools, grinding wheels and moving machine parts.

The selected candidate is required to work either day or evening shifts, and possibly weekends on rotation as necessary. It is expected that they will assigned to different workshops to learn all aspects of their trade.
