Position Objective

The Independent Redress Mechanism (IRM) requires an intern to support the IRM team in the execution of its five mandates: processing requests for the reconsideration of funding proposals; processing complaints from persons adversely impacted by GCF projects; providing advice with an eye to improving GCF performance and outcomes; working with GCF direct access entities to build their capacity related to grievance mechanisms and procedures; and conducting outreach to raise awareness about the work of the IRM. The intern’s primary functions will be to support IRM staff with relevant research required in the context of its complaints handling and advisory work and to support the IRM in the execution of its communications and capacity building strategies.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Registrar and Case Officer, the Intern is expected to:

Purpose

  • Provide general support to the IRM team, particularly with regard to research and communications.
  • Assist with the coordination and logistics for IRM events, particularly capacity building workshops and outreach activities.

Engagement

  • Support the IRM in its engagement with other international accountability mechanisms, and in its efforts to build a community of practice among second generation grievance redress and accountability mechanism practitioners.

Delivery

  • Conduct case-specific research and produce relevant reports concerning any active cases of the IRM. Conduct general research relevant to the IRM’s mandate as required.
  • Conduct media monitoring of GCF projects.
  • Design and produce a series of communications products to allow the IRM to communicate effectively with different audiences.
  • Upload and prepare content for the IRM’s website, and social media pages.

 

Requirements and qualifications*

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from Master’s program in sustainable development, international relations, international development, law, communications, or other related fields;
  • Knowledge and experience with designing approaches to research and collecting and analyzing survey data.
  • Knowledge, understanding of and/or exposure to accountability mechanisms, courts and tribunals, alternate dispute resolution or grievance redress mechanisms is highly desirable;
  • Knowledge and experience in designing and producing communication materials for different audiences, particularly related to environmental or climate change issues;
  • Proficiency in a variety of communications tools and products (e.g. image and video editing software);
  • An innovative out-of-the-box thinker who is flexible and adept at finding solutions to research problems and communications needs;
  • Excellent writing skills, especially synthesizing complex information and good at multitasking and working to pressing deadlines and challenging critiques;
  • Excellent command of English is highly required; knowledge of another United Nations language particularly French, Spanish, and Arabic is not required but is an advantage.

The above criteria should be seen as indicators of the experience and skills that would qualify candidates for consideration.
