Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director/Head of Legal Affairs Office, LED, and the overall supervision of the Director, LED, the incumbent is responsible, amongst other duties, for depositary functions with respect to international instruments deposited by Governments with the Secretary-General and any legal matters related thereto. In particular, the incumbent is required to:

1 Provide legal advice related to treaty law aspects of the Organization;

2 Provide legal advice and interpretation of legal instruments, treaties, agreements, resolutions and rules of procedure of IMO organs;

3 Provide legal advice and assistance in resolving procedural and substantive legal questions at meetings;

4 Examine legal issues relating to the functions, structure and activities of the Organization; 

5 Oversee examination of instruments of ratification/ accession to IMO treaties deposited by Governments; identify any anomalies or problematical legal issues in the instruments and oversee the preparation of the necessary acknowledgements in their regard; oversee the preparation of circulars for dissemination to  interested parties, including the UN, regarding
new ratifications/accessions;

6 Examine draft resolutions adopting amendments to existing treaties and assist committees, drafting and working groups as and when required;

7 Examine texts of newly-adopted treaties and amendments to existing treaties from a legal point of view, arrange for the preparation and issue of certified texts and monitor requirements for the entry into force of treaties and amendments thereto;

8 Oversee the management and maintenance of databases related to the depositary functions;

9 Oversee preparation of Council and Assembly documents and briefs with respect to the status of treaties, including the Summary of Decisions of the Council and the list of resolutions adopted by the Assembly; monitor draft Assembly resolutions and act as the focal point between the relevant Divisions and the English Translation Section with regard to the final preparation and issue of resolutions; and oversee preparation of the decisions of the Assembly not contained in resolutions, for inclusion in the publication "Resolutions and other decisions of the Assembly";

10 Supervise the production of original treaty texts of instruments adopted under the auspices of IMO; oversee the Organization’s archives of communications received from Governments constituting State acts in respect of treaty instruments and other documents, as well as treaty texts;

11 Oversee preparation and issue Procès Verbales or Notes Verbales of correction or rectification of treaty texts;

12 Oversee preparation of documents and related briefs for sessions of the Legal Committee on the status of
treaties;

13 Oversee preparation of the agenda and Notes Verbales of invitation with regard to sessions of the Legal Committee and for diplomatic conferences convened under responsibility of LED; coordinate preparation of the reports; 

14 Examine documents submitted to diplomatic
conferences, the texts of treaties and Final Acts adopted by conferences convened under the responsibility of LED;  arrange for circulation of the authentic texts;

15 Consult with counterparts and participate in negotiations of treaties and agreements in other organizations; represent the Organization at conferences and meetings of other organizations;

16 Represent the Legal Affairs Office at internal meetings, Secretariat's working groups and other meetings involving divisional policies.
