Mission and objectives

UNDP works in more than 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion. We help countries develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities and build resilience to sustain development results. UNDP has been present in Malawi since 1964. Working closely with the Government of Malawi, civil society and the private sector, UNDP' s work aims to contribute to economic growth, sustainable environmental management, and democratic governance and accountability in Malawi. UNDP’s Country Programme Document is closely aligned to the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MDGS III) and supports Malawi’s aim to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. UNDP ‘s programme is designed to address the interlinked issues of poverty, inequality and vulnerability to shocks and is managed within two portfolios: Responsive Institutions and Citizen Engagement which works towards strengthening effective, accountable and inclusive governance that promotes civic engagement, respect for human rights, rule of law, peace and democracy. It also works towards strengthening data generation and analysis. Resilience and Sustainable Growth which focusses on enhancing economic innovation, inclusive business, job creation, and renewable energy access. It also works towards helping Malawi adapt to climate change and build resilience to disasters.

Context

In the context of the UNDP Malawi strategic direction at the country level, the incumbent will deliver a well-rounded communications plan for the Governance Unit; identify subjects of interest to develop advocacy/communications activities; ensure the accurate and timely production and dissemination of high-quality public information products and human interest stories to highlight UNDP’s work on the ground; promote achievements and results towards reaching UNDP Governance targets; build contacts with the press/media and optimize networking opportunities.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the Governance Portfolio Manager, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: Support the implementation of UNDP’s peacebuilding and conflict resolution programme, in coordination with the Peace and Development Advisor and team. Support the implementation of the National Peace Architecture, including the provision of capacity support to the Malawi Peace Commission and District Peace Committees (DPCs) when established. Ensure effective and inclusive engagement of civil society organizations, particularly women and youth in peacebuilding structures. Support the communication and programme coordination with partners and stakeholders (civil society, the private sector and development partners). Support the country office with conflict analysis, mapping and populating the Country Risk dashboard to aid conflict sensitive programme and project design and implementation. Provide support towards maintenance of active knowledge management systems of the Country Office in the area of conflict prevention, peacebuilding and peace education in Malawi. Support the UNDP Governance Team with M&E, including collecting and processing data in the framework of the annual work plans for peacebuilding and conflict resolution programming and contribute to establishing baselines for each programmatic outcome. Support mainstreaming of gender and youth in all peace initiatives and through awareness on UNSCRs 1325 and 2250 and additional UN resolutions on women, youth peace and security Other tasks as directed by the Governance Portfolio Manager and/or DRR.
