BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. In the U.S., the IRC resettles approximately 11,000 refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship. The IRC in Salt Lake City opened it office in 1994, and provides resettlement services through extended case management to newly arrived refugees for up to 24-months as well as over twenty different programs to educate and empower refugees.

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: New Roots brings refugees together to share their agricultural skills and connect with their new home and community by providing opportunities to grow food in community garden and farm sites across Salt Lake Valley. The New Roots Education Intern will work across New Roots agricultural sites to assist with educational curriculum development and implementation.

COMMITMENT: 12-16 weeks starting in January 2022 with option to extend, 15-20 hours per week in-person, flexible schedule including some evenings and Saturdays.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Work with the New Roots Logistics Specialist to conduct outreach to customers in the Salt Lake City, West Valley, and Draper areas.

• Create targeted marketing campaigns for SNAP/EBT customers, informed by research into best practices for reaching this population.

• Manage documentation for customer purchases of CSA memberships by continually updating member tracking sheet with relevant information.

• Collaborate with partners interested in receiving CSA shares at their workplace in member recruitment at those employer sites.

• Generate recipe and other storytelling content for the weekly CSA newsletter and other New Roots social media outlets through interviews and engagement with New Roots program participants.

• Assist the New Roots Local Food Markets Coordinator with marketing for New Roots farmers markets.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. The intern will demonstrate knowledge of New Roots programming and how best to promote the CSA to potential customers.

2. The intern will gain experience with food access programming and promotion through outreach to SNAP/EBT customers.

3. The intern will gain professional experience in customer management in the context of a large-scale (200+ member) CSA program.

4. The intern will demonstrate an ability to communicate with limited English speakers and people from different cultures.
