ABOUT GCA

The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) is an international organization that works as a solutions broker to catalyze action and support for adaptation solutions, from the international to the local, in partnership with the public and private sector, to ensure we learn from each other and work together for a climate resilient future. Adapting to impacts of climate change provides a “win-win” for health, livelihoods, food security, water supply, human security and economic growth. The work of the GCA elevates the visibility and political importance of climate adaptation and facilitates solutions, such as smarter investments, new technologies and better planning to become more resilient to climate-related threats. GCA is a rapidly growing organization with offices in Abidjan, Beijing, Dhaka, Groningen, and Rotterdam.

GCA has an ambitious 2020-2025 business plan with three pillars:

  • Programs and Action: Food Security; Using Nature for more resilient infrastructure; Water for Urban Growth and Resilience; Climate Finance; Youth Leadership
  • Knowledge Acceleration: Building adaptation knowledge globally through cutting edge products such as the State and Trends in Adaptation Report and the Knowledge Exchange Platform
  • Agenda Setting and Advocacy: Formulating policy messages to move the global, regional, and local adaptation agendas forward.

Youth Leadership Program

The GCA’s focus on youth leadership aims to make young people central to driving the adaptation agenda and implementation worldwide through its Youth Leadership Program. The Program’s mission is to mobilize the next generation of adaptation leaders around the world, empowering youth to make the case for adaptation on the global stage and make their communities more climate-resilient.

Youth Adaptation Network

The Youth Adaptation Network (YAN) is an umbrella platform to engage, empower and amplify the role of young people in the adaptation agenda. By creating an environment where young people are engaged as equal stakeholders in climate adaptation actions and providing them with learning opportunities, the Youth Adaptation Network will translate knowledge into action by engaging and participating in the design and implementation of local and national adaptation plans. The network has members in over 130 countries. In 2020 the GCA’s Youth Adaptation Network designed the Global Youth Call to Action: Adapt for our Future through 15 global and regional consultations and inputs from hundreds of thousands of young people from more than 120 countries around the globe. The Call to Action outlines the areas for this decade of action on adaptation, which include: raising awareness on adaptation to climate change; promoting universal education, training and skills development to empower younger generations to adapt to the impacts of climate change; fostering youth participation in the implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the SDGs; expanding economic opportunities for youth, adaptation jobs and youth-led businesses; and strengthening youth leadership of girls, young women, indigenous youth, young farmers and the most vulnerable youth.

Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program

GCA and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have joined forces to use their complementary expertise, resources and networks to develop and implement a bold new Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP) to galvanize climate resilient actions through a triple win approach to address COVID-19, climate change, and the economy. One of the AAAP’s Flagship Programs aims to empower youth for entrepreneurship and job creation in climate adaptation and resilience by promoting innovation and inclusive growth for young people in climate resilient jobs; developing skills and knowledge on adaptation, building the entrepreneurial capacity of African youth; and facilitating access to funding and mentorship to youth-led and women-led businesses in the adaptation space.
