Job Overview:

The External Relations (ER) department at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is comprised of three main but complementary functional areas: Private fundraising, Communications, and Advocacy. The main objective of the department is to enable this organization of more than 15,000 staff to have the resources needed to continue serving 18 million people worldwide in places affected by war and disaster, shape the humanitarian sector by influencing key policies and reforms, and build and grow IRC’s reputation. The USA Philanthropy unit, part of the ER department, leads the organization’s work with USA-based High-Net-Worth Individuals.

Within the External Relations and USA Philanthropy departments, the Senior Officer, Planned Giving, West Coast, is responsible for working closely with planned giving prospects and donors in the West Coast and Mid-West regions to ensure an increased number of legacy gift commitments and a growing and engaged legacy society. Accountable for securing and sustaining planned gifts, the Officer will work directly with prospects and donors as well as USA Philanthropy colleagues to ensure a healthy financial future for our humanitarian work. This may entail the following core tasks: generating new leads; soliciting donors for planned gifts; building strong relationships to steward legacy donors; crafting and implementing cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies to connect with and inspire planned giving donors and prospects; advising colleagues on planned giving collaborations; and reporting data and results of planned giving efforts.

Reporting to the Director of Planned Giving, the Senior Officer, Planned Giving, West Coast is an important role to ensuring the successful execution of team revenue goals and metrics. The Senior Officer will collaborate closely with the Planned Giving team, including an East Coast region Officer, as well as various USA Philanthropy colleagues. The candidate will be expected to understand the needs and performance of donors and prospects, communicate and collaborate superbly with colleagues, business partners and supporters, use knowledge of various gift planning instruments to assist colleagues and donors, seek to continue to learn about IRC programs, think strategically, offer creative solutions and manage systems to continually grow and improve the IRC’s donor relationships and prospecting with high wealth individuals and families.The ideal candidate will work well independently while also thriving in a congenial team environment.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage a large portfolio of planned gift prospects and donors in the West Coast and Mid-west regions.
  • Provide timely follow-up to new marketing leads to educate prospects, discover and create new planned gifts for the IRC.
  • Craft and implement meaningful engagement opportunities for planned giving donors and prospects to deepen understanding of IRC’s mission and the benefits of legacy giving and gifts of complex assets.
  • Focus on high quality interactions through in person visits and events, virtual field trips, digital and mail communications.
  • Collaborate with major gift colleagues to develop and execute strategy to include planned giving conversations, solicitations and stewardship with IRC’s high net worth donors.
  • Build and solicit charitable gift annuity proposals and agreements for donors.
  • Successfully attain individual goals of high quality meetings, prospect conversions, lead identification, and outright giving in alignment with overall planned giving team goals.
  • Timely and accurate input of opportunity data into Salesforce to drive pipeline activity, report on progress to goals and other key metrics of team performance, and find opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in IRC including direct response, marketing, field programs, legal and finance to ensure strong communication and understanding of planned giving’s role and process with the organization.
  • Co-create and complete marketing strategies to expand portfolio of legacy donors.
  • Promote and practice inclusive work environment behavior and demonstrate a willingness to learn about the IRC’s commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and anti-colonial non-profit best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the achievement of planned giving objectives.

Job Qualifications:

Education Minimum: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience

Work Experience: 6 years of progressive experience working with individual donors including planned giving.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

·Knowledge of planned giving vehicles and benefits;

·Ability to communicate effectively with older donors about IRC’s mission and sophisticated planning tools;

·Ability to independently identify and focus on the highest priority tasks;

·Highly self-motivated with high level of personal accountability;

·Effective collaboration with colleagues at all levels across the organization;

  • Highly computer literate, to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint as CRM databases, such as Salesforce or Raiser’s Edge;
  • Proven organizational and time management skills;

·Excellent interpersonal skills and written and oral communication skills;

·Strong listening skills and the ability to accurately follow guidance;

·Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to deadlines;

·The ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as take initiative independently;

·Commitment to respect and maintain confidentiality of donor information;

·Work successfully in a complex, fast-paced organization

Working Environment:This role requires working remotely full-time. Applicants must have a home or alternate workspace they can effectively complete their work from during regularly scheduled hours.Approximately 15% domestic travel required, including occasional overnight stays, when it is safe to do so.
