Job Overview:

The Education and Learning department at the IRC in NY provides free classes and educational services to adult clients. These individuals, mainly refugees and asylees, are immigrants who are survivors of war, persecution, and civil conflict. They have diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. Moreover, they are highly adaptable, usually multilingual, and eager to start rebuilding their lives in New York.

Cultural Orientation is an orientation course for all newly arrived refugees which focuses on essential information for new Americans through content-based instruction.The class aims to familiarize clients with their new environment and prepare them for the daily challenges and opportunities of living as part of the New York City community. Instruction is highly structured, with an emphasis on strong English language support and performance-based outcomes.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Conduct outreach to clients and interpreters to coordinate scheduling orientation dates, times and logistics.
  • Complete training in CORE Adult learning principles and CO curriculum.
  • Teach workshop at least twice per week on select days using IRC’s curriculum and materials on zoom and in person.
  • Assess students at the end of the workshop.
  • Attend home visits to deliver orientation at clients’ homes, and or pick clients to and from their homes when needed.
  • Attend regular meetings with the program coordinator.
