Org. Setting and Reporting

The internship is located with the Language and Communications Training Unit (LCTU)/ Capacity Development and Operational Training Service (CDOTS)/ Department of Operational Support (DOS).

The Department of Operational Support (DOS) provides end-to-end operational support, advisory services and other solutions to the operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices-away-from-headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions.

The Capacity Development Operational Training Service (CDOTS) provides support and coordination to business process improvement in operational areas (Language and Communication, Human Resources, Finance, Supply Chain, Information Technology). CDOTS also provides training in enterprise resource management systems and operational training.

The Language and Communications Training Unit (LCTU) promotes the core value of multilingualism and delivers on the General Assembly request of the Secretary-General to continue delivery of linguistic training adapted to the United Nations (Resolution 73/346, para.79). To do so, LCTU offers language learning and communication advisory services in the six official languages for staff members at UN Headquarters in New York and also in the Global Secretariat.

The internship is for a maximum period of six months.
Due to COVID-19, candidates should be prepared to work remotely (telecommute) for the duration of the internship.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours).

The Intern will work under the supervision of the Team Leader, LCTU/CDOTS/DOS

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include:

Online learning tasks
• Improve current online courses in Moodle, help with transitioning to Moodle courses currently hosted in other LMS, and implement Moodle functions (Gradebook, certificates and/or badges, automated tasks…)
• Help to test, update and/or improve current teaching materials (according to LCTU standard)
• Help develop or record audios and/or videos for LCTU courses and other promotional materials.

Graphic design
• Design and edit materials according to DOS branding guidelines.
• Develop graphics and visual images for LCTU courses and other promotional materials.
• Assist in the design of brochures, reports, fast facts, infographics and other visual documents.

Administrative/reporting tasks
• Edit and proofread documents in English.
• Assist with surveys: question design, implementation online, data collection, data analysis and data visualization
• Compile information relevant to the current LCTU projects and contribute to these projects.
• Create instructional documents (such as FAQs) for learning programmes and projects.
• Take meeting minutes.
• Desirable: Translate documents into other UN official languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish.

Additionally,
The “LCTU-Development Team internship” requires the incumbent to:
• Prepare reports, charts and tables of data for stakeholders using Excel and BI tools such as Power BI.
• Perform data exploration, data cross-referencing, data cleaning, data visualization.
• Demonstrate a very high level of attention to detail.

The “General Language and Communications Training Unit internship” requires the incumbent to:
• Write, translate, edit and proofread documents in French.

Communications tasks
• Assist with the implementation of the LCTU marketing plan – and ensure alignment with the larger CDOTS communication plan - to update websites and course brochure, create presentations, and help at LCTU information/promotional events.
• Assist with presentations and other events.
• Participate in and contribute to LCTU meetings.

Additionally,
The “LCTU-Development Team internship” requires the incumbent to:
• Participate in webinars and meetings with learning managers and online language learning providers.

The “General Language and Communications Training Unit internship” requires the incumbent to:
• Update the websites in French.
• Help at LCTU information/promotional events in French.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements (A or B):

(a) be enrolled in, or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b) be enrolled in, or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).

- Be proficient in standard office automation equipment (e.g. computer, scanner, printer, etc.) and software systems (e.g. Microsoft Windows 10 or similar; Microsoft Office or similar, Excel, Power BI etc.).

- Be familiar with cutting-edge technology and tools and/or have experience with social networking and collaboration platforms.

- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

- Preference will be given to applicants with an educational background in Information and Communications Technology, Information Management, Instructional Design, Marketing, Business Management, Language Technology, Applied Linguistics and/or Education, Project Management.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for the internship. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
