CHAI’s global malaria program provides direct technical and operational support to countries around the globe to strengthen their malaria programs and reduce the burden of this preventable, treatable disease. We support governments to scale up effective interventions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance, with the goals of sustainably reducing the number of malaria-related illnesses and deaths worldwide in the short-term and accelerating progress towards malaria elimination in the long term.

 

Overview of Role:

 

CHAI is seeking a Gender, Equity and Inclusion Technical Advisor to provide gender, equity and social inclusion management, oversight, and technical assistance to CHAI’s malaria and neglected tropical diseases (NTD) portfolio. The Gender, Equity and Inclusion Advisor will have proven experience designing and implementing successful programs at the intersection of gender and health.

 

They will provide guidance and thought leadership to increase the sustainability and impact of CHAI’s malaria/NTD work by integrating gender and equity considerations more purposefully throughout its programming. They will work closely with the global and country teams to advance gender and equity priorities and contribute to the development of innovative strategies to address gender inequality and malaria/NTDs and increase the resilience of local partnership networks in focus countries. This individual will contribute gender technical expertise to new business development, oversee and guide gender integration activities within the malaria/NTD portfolio, and represent CHAI at global forums on gender transformative programming.

The position will be based in sub-Saharan Africa and report to the Director, Malaria Program Support.

Responsibilities

Technical

  • Oversee and manage the prioritization, planning and execution of gender integration recommendations working closely with multiple global and country team members throughout the process
  • Provide technical leadership and expertise in gender integration, GBV prevention and response, and inclusive development in malaria or other priority health sectors
  • Lead the development of and provide technical guidance and quality review for gender and inclusion technical deliverables, including review of gender analysis research protocols, data analysis plans, and other documents such as reports, toolkits, and journal articles
  • Provide technical support to CHAI’s Gender Focal Points (GFPs) and design a plan to support and train staff on a consistent basis to build up gender expertise and skills on the malaria team
  • Design and facilitate gender and inclusion trainings and other internal and external activities using utilization-focused, appreciative, participatory, adult learning methodologies and approaches
  • Keep up to date on gender and equity research, news and advances as it relates to global health and periodically share updates with the team and facilitate a discussion on which aspects we want to consider in our programming for greater impact
  • Represent CHAI in national and international gender and malaria TWGs
  • Share knowledge across the organization and support institutionalization of a gender framework to support CHAI’s work across diseases
  • Travel internationally and domestically, as needed and in alignment with COVID-19 related travel recommendations

Project Management

  • Build and maintain high quality relationships and communications with staff and partners on assigned projects
  • Help define approaches to measure progress against gender transformative targets
  • Collaborate with country teams on gender components of annual workplans; support and contribute to project planning and implementation that is responsive to country needs
  • Provide technical guidance and quality assurance on all activities, products, and deliverables
  • Own and lead progress on CHAI’s malaria/NTD equity workstream to transform power and gender imbalances and counteract colonial legacies in global health, in close collaboration with program support and technical teams, including setting targets and metrics for success
  • Manage project-level budgets (e.g. if gender-specific grants are awarded) and provide oversight and guidance to project staff
  • Recruit, hire, and manage project consultants as needed
  • Help advance cross-disease program opportunities across CHAI
  • Support and provide guidance to the Gender Equity Network – particularly as it relates to the gender programming pillar

New Business

  • Identify new funding opportunities for gender programming relevant to CHAI malaria’s priorities (including opportunities for integration with women’s/maternal/primary health)
  • Lead or contribute to technical components of proposals related to gender equality and inclusive development
  • Contribute to the expansion of CHAI’s global consultant network by engaging professional fora, and identifying potential consultants for proposals and task orders and contracts.
  • Contribute to company business development through networking in professional circles with prospective clients

General

  • Engage fully as a member of the CHAI malaria team, including participating in staff meetings and other CHAI events
  • Other duties, as assigned
Qualifications

Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of experience, or a Master’s degree and 6 years of experience, or a PhD and 4 years of experience. Degree in international development, gender and development, public health, social science, or a related field.

 

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience leading small to medium sized gender and social inclusion projects (including overall responsibility for technical quality, managing budgets, and leading intercultural teams)
  • Strong gender analysis, integration and capacity building skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required
  • Ability to deal sensitively in multi-cultural environments and build effective working relationships internally and externally
  • Demonstrated experience managing, and supervising staff, consultants, sub-contractors, and teams
  • Experience in designing and facilitating different types of meetings and workshops using a variety of participatory, adult-learning methodologies and approaches
  • Demonstrated presence and participation in gender equality and inclusive development networks
  • In-depth understanding of international health processes, actors, and client cultures
  • Ability to think strategically and integrate diverse information from varied sources
  • Fluency in English required, competency in Spanish, French or other languages in the countries where CHAI has malaria programs is a plus
  • Knowledge of or experience in applying appreciative inquiry and participatory approaches highly desirable
  • Ability to use an appreciative approach in client and colleague interactions, and model that approach for others
