Background of the project

Over the past 80 years, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has developed unparalleled expertise in responding to emergencies and helping uprooted communities to rebuild through long-term, sustainable development solutions. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC’s mission is to help people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. The IRC is on the ground in more than 40 countries, providing emergency relief and development programming, rebuilding lives in the wake of disaster and in situations of vulnerability. Through 28 regional offices in cities across the United States, the IRC also helps refugees resettle in the US. The IRC is committed to a culture of inclusivity and empowerment, humanitarian leadership, innovation in all aspects of our work, creative partnerships and, most crucially, accountability to those we serve.

IRC’s Latin America Region is comprised of three population-based responses to regional crisis: 1) the Venezuela Crisis including Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru; 2) Northern of Central America (NCA - El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras) and 3) Mexico & Cross Border (including coordination with IRC-US programming). Additionally, the Latin America region coordinated with the Emergency and Humanitarian Action Unit is responding to the current humanitarian crisis in Haiti through a partnership-based approach.

Scope of Work:

The Regional Interpreter & Translation Quality Specialist will provide essential support to the continuity of the IRC’s programming and efforts toward inclusion by guaranteeing quality translation and interpretations within the Latin America region of the Crisis Response, Recovery and Development department. In addition to completing translations of new and existing materials, the Regional Interpreter & Translation Quality Specialist understands the IRC’s technical language and reviews documents and communication materials to ensure consistent IRC terminology. As prioritized by the Latin America regional team, the Regional Interpreter & Translation Quality Specialist provides simultaneous interpretation for IRC meetings and regional calls, ensuring participation from the Latin America region staff.

Deliverables:

  • Interpret (simultaneous and/or consecutive) at hour-long intervals between Spanish and English for regional conferences, regional meetings, donor meetings, trainings and informative sessions.
  • Translate new and existing resources (including maintenance and updating already translated documents). This might include donor documentation (sub-award and partnership agreements, guidelines), internal policies and processes, training materials and communication materials.
  • Ensure quality assurance and use of consistent IRC-specific terminologies in translated materials.
  • Coordinate local translation procurement, including researching potential companies and supporting procurement processes.
  • Liaise with Latin America and HQ focal points to ensure appropriate translation coverage
