Signpost is a digitally enabled responsive information service that supports and empowers populations in crisis, including asylum seekers, migrants, and people who have experienced violence. Our program equips people with information to understand their options so that they can make informed decisions about how to stay safe, get urgent care for acute problems, exercise their rights, and access services. It was developed by the IRC and Mercy Corps in 2015 to address asylum seekers’ and migrants’ pressing need for reliable information upon arrival to Greece, and is now active in 15 countries on 5 continents.

It meets communities on the digital platforms they already use and aims to deliver information that is contextualized to their specific needs and speaks to their lived realities. This approach draws on evidence that people are more likely to trust and act on information that is responsive to their needs, speaks to their lived realities, and that comes from “peers” rather than authority figures.

Signpost- Ukraine Crisis

IRC is launching its Signpost program in response to the Ukrainian refugee crisis in partnership with Google and existing volunteer-led initiatives. We plan to build a large ambitious program that spans Europe and empowers people displaced by the crisis in Ukraine with the most important information they need to navigate their next steps, and eventually rebuild their lives, with access to individual, person-to-person support along the way.

Position Summary

Editorial Officers are responsible for information collection and content creation in their area of geographic coverage. The ideal candidate is someone with solid journalism training who is eager to apply those skills to the creation of practical, actionable information to help people affected by the crisis in Ukraine. S/he is responsible for establishing and maintaining a network of sources across a number of countries in Europe, researching, vetting and producing accurate and updated content to be published on Signpost platforms. S/he is skilled in rendering complex information such as dense legal guidance, simple, clear, and comprehensible.

Responsibilities

•Develop and maintain an in-depth, nuanced understanding of the information needed by people displaced by the crisis in Ukraine through staying abreast of reports and current literature, developing a network of internal and external contacts, attending working group and other meetings, and traveling to sites and other locations.

•Ensure Signpost content is accurate, complete, easy to understand and engaging.

•Gather, vet, condense and otherwise organize content delivered from information focal points and partners for dissemination.

•Research and create written, photo and video content as assigned by the Editorial Manager.

•Generate contents followed by Signpost’s users’ feedback, comments, questions requests

•Regularly pitch ideas for new content and content updates to the Editorial Manager.

•Coordinate with different team members and technical advisors on drafting content.

•Incorporate feedback into draft content from Editorial Manager and Technical Advisors.

•Manage and enter content into content management systems.

•Coordinate with the ICT team to ensure smooth operation of and feedback on Signpost web platforms.

Knowledge and Experience:

•Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, BA/BS, or equivalent combination of background and experience

•1 year experience in reporting, writing and editing experience, including for online platforms and social media.

•Multimedia content development skills and advantage. Willingness to learn required.

•Excellent oral and written Ukrainian skills required. English a plus. Other European languages also a plus.

•Ability to learn quickly and proactively seek out information, assess trends/developments, and build relationships across diverse actors and contexts.

•Ability to adapt journalistic ethics to a humanitarian context.

•Humanitarian experience is a plus.

Success Factors:

The successful Editorial Officer is extremely proactive, detail-oriented and organized. S/he values accurate and error-free reporting. S/he is self-directed and reliably completes tasks. S/he is diplomatic and able to work with a range of peers to gather and verify information. S/he is tech- and social media-savvy and quick to learn new tools. S/he has a strong commitment to teamwork and accountability and regularly seeks opportunities for collaboration and thrives in evolving and ambiguous environments.
