About GiveDirectly

GiveDirectly (GD) aims to reshape international giving – and millions of lives – by providing cash grants directly to the world’s poorest. The Brookings Institution estimates that $70B of cash transfers would be required to eliminate the poverty gap; the aid sector currently spends $135B each year, much of it on evidence-free interventions. GiveDirectly wants to change that, establishing cash transfers as a benchmark for foreign aid – as the index fund is a benchmark for the financial industry – and in the process accelerating the end of extreme poverty.

GD has raised over $700M since launching in 2011, delivered cash to more than 1 million people, and launched offices in 10 countries. We’ve also supported large-scale, experimental research that indicates strong recipient impact of our programs. As a result, GD has been celebrated as one of the most innovative non-profit companies by Fast Company, while the growing cash transfer movement (and GD’s leading role within it) have been featured in the New York Times Magazine, This American Life, Foreign Affairs, and The Economist.

We’re looking for exceptional talent to grow our collaborative, diverse team. Joining GiveDirectly provides the opportunity to work alongside individuals who come from 21 different countries and speak 69 different languages. We’re actively working toward an equitable and inclusive environment for all team members, and seek candidates who will bring diverse perspectives and experiences to our organization. We recruit from organizations across all industries: our team has hailed from sectors including start-ups, government, consultancies, investment banks, and nonprofits.

Across our global offices, our culture is candid, analytical, non-hierarchical, and fast-paced. We value ability, adaptability, and willingness to learn. We offer competitive salary and benefits, as well as performance-based bonuses.

About the Role

The Community Engagement Associate Field Manager (CE AFM) is a member of the Recipient Safeguarding and Advocacy team. Their role is to ensure eligible recipients are safeguarded, their rights are protected, their choices are respected, and that they have the necessary support mechanisms to fully realize the impact of the transfers they receive from GiveDirectly. The CE AFM will invest the majority of their time doing community outreach and engagement to understand how our program is being received in the community, and identifying any issues for our recipients. They will be responsible for field risk assessment, community mobilization and sensitization, and recipient protection.

This role will require sharp judgment on operational issues and challenges, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and a strong commitment to GiveDirectly's values, mission and model.

Reports to:

  • Senior Manager of Recipient Safeguarding and Advocacy - Anna Schuck

What you’ll do:

  • Serve as the main point of contact for all recipient safeguarding issues as a "Safeguarding Focal Point". The CE AFM will advise on program design, directly follow up with recipients, and provide guidance to other GD staff to ensure all aspects of our program are respectful, dignifying and reflective of GDs commitments to "Recipients First."
  • Help to develop the community engagement strategies for the Yemen Program
  • Deliver safeguarding training to other staff twice per year.
  • Lead focus group discussions and other community meetings to help understand community risks, needs, and collaboration opportunities.
  • Lead community scoping assessments in advance of new program launches to help us fully understand the needs of the communities we serve.
  • Hold community conversations in order to monitor community concerns and identify risks. This could include recipient inclusion/exclusion errors, community tensions or conflicts, adverse events, sexual harassment, or concerns with local leader.
  • Conduct in-depth investigations on different cases as assigned by your manager and propose adequate recommendations for conclusion. Cases could involve fraud, request for bribes, thefts, sexual harassment, presence of impostors, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager

What you’ll bring:

  • 2+ years working with vulnerable communities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to show respect and openness toward someone whose social and cultural background is different from one’s own. The CE AFM will be the face of our program for recipients and will need to approach all communications and interactions with an eye toward delivering the best possible experience for recipients.
  • Great communication skills – CE AFM will need to talk to recipients and other members of the community about potentially challenging or sensitive subjects. The AFM will need to be able to enter the community, identify who to talk to, and be comfortable leading one on one conversations.
  • Empathy, honesty, and the highest standards of integrity. High emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, especially with talking to people living in vulnerable communities
  • Excellent critical thinking and decision making skills. Strong ability to show good judgment when resolving complex problems
  • Technological literacy – AFM will be required to use smartphone, tablet, or computer to accurately record recipient details in survey forms and databases.
  • Fluency in Arabic and English required.
  • Strong interest in advancing the distinctive values and mission of GiveDirectly

We welcome and strongly encourage applications from candidates who have personal or professional experience in the communities that we serve.
