Avaaz is the world’s largest global campaigning movement.
Avaaz launched in 2007 with an ambitious but simple mission: empower citizens of all nations to act together to close the gap between the world we have and the world most people everywhere want.
The movement now comprises nearly 70 million people from every country in the world, growing by over 6 million in the last 12 months alone. Our model enables people to channel their individual voices and resources into a powerful collective force that impacts pressing global issues, from climate and ecological crises, to human rights abuses and the dismantling of democracy.
We have a staff of 140 spread across 6 continents, and annual revenues of $25m. We are funded entirely by small donations from individual Avaaz members.
We are currently seeking a Board Chair. The Chair will lead the Board in discharging its responsibility for the organisation’s wellbeing from a financial and HR perspective, as well as managing its legal and material risks. They will also ensure the Board works effectively as a team in supporting and holding to account the CEO, who leads the organisation in furthering its mission on behalf of the members.
Candidates from across the globe and from a broad range of backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will bring a passion for the idea of global community grounded in diversity, equity, mutual respect and solidarity; and a belief that current human and environmental challenges require bold and urgent global action. They will demonstrate significant experience in CEO (or equivalent leadership) roles at complex, global organisations, whether for-profit or non-profit. Considerable experience at board level is crucial, as is an ability to lead with emotional intelligence and create an atmosphere which encourages collaboration, open communication and inclusivity.
The time commitment will initially be on average 8-10 hours per month, dropping to 4-8 hours per month once the Board Chair is established in their role. The role comes with a monthly stipend and reasonable expenses will be paid.
