Job Overview:

As a member of the Strategy Unit you will enable the IRC to put its new strategy into action. Whether it is supporting the development and execution of a strategy for how the IRC seeks to influence policy or helping the organization to measure and improve its performance, your work will spread far and wide within the organization and ultimately impact the lives of those who interact with the IRC – 18 million people worldwide in places affected by war and disaster.

This is a one-year secondment to the Strategy Unit to facilitate exchange of perspective between the IRC and the private sector. The Strategy Manager will provide strategic planning and problem-solving support to the organization on various projects aligned to the top priorities of the IRC. They will be part of a small, tight-knit project team that will quickly break down problems and iterate rapidly towards evidence-based solutions. This position requires strong strategic problem-solving skills, excellent interpersonal skills, a high level of personal initiative and the ability to work well in a multicultural, dynamic environment. This role will have a particular responsibility to bring in problem solving methodologies and thought leadership from the private sector into the team and into IRC more widely.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Leads substantive work stream within a big project, or smaller stand-alone strategic projects, under the supervision of a Senior Manager, Associate Director, or Chief Strategy Officer
  • Independently manage work planning in collaboration with supervisor taking ownership for high-quality timely delivery and surfacing and quickly resolving roadblocks as they arise
  • Produce crucial analyses that feed into the bigger problem the team is solving
  • Generate actionable insights and evidence-based user-centric solutions, informed by best practices, analysis and extensive consultation with IRC staff
  • Apply structure to ambiguous, complex problems
  • Manage relationships and collaborate closely with mid-level and senior staff across the IRC
  • Facilitate decision-making and consensus-building as part of a team
  • Contribute effectively to the work-streams of others on the team as required, and participate in full-team problem-solving
  • Give and receive regular developmental feedback and contribute actively to creating a positive, focused and effective team environment
  • Adopt a learning mindset and take responsibility for continuous performance improvement
  • Act as the team-wide focal point for relationship with outside strategy consultancies (as appropriate)
  • Support Strategy Fellows (internal secondees from other parts of IRC) with training and capacity building, especially when it comes to problem solving techniques
  • Bring thought leadership from the private sector into the Strategy Unit and into IRC

Job Requirements:

Work / Educational Experience:

  • 2-3 years’ work experience in a strategy or project management role, ideally from strategy consulting, with a track record of high performance

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

  • Experience in implementing strategic change and organizational change management
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills; proven ability to prioritize and deliver on time
  • Ability to respond enthusiastically and positively to ambiguity
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills; able to conduct pragmatic analysis, and distill insights and recommendations  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; overall ability to be clear and concise in all communications   
  • Strong meeting facilitation and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels  
  • Highly collaborative and proven ability to work both independently and in a dynamic, cross-functional global team structure
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office suite, especially Powerpoint and Excel

Preferred experience & skills:

  • Experience in a humanitarian or development organization, or demonstrated interest for development / humanitarian issues
  • Knowledge of Spanish, French or Arabic beneficial

Working Environment:  

·         Standard office working environment

·         Some international travel

·         This role may require working remotely full or part time and part time remote employees may be required to share workspace.
