Organizational Setting

The Forestry Policy and Resources Division of the Forestry Department leads FAO's work in promoting sustainable forest management and providing leadership on the environmental, social and economic dimensions of forestry, including its contributions to poverty reduction and food security and nutrition. It liaises with member countries, civil society and the private sector in aspects ranging from development of effective forest policies to forest conservation and management issues, and strengthens the role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Division also collects, analyses and disseminates information on the world's forest resources and on the production, trade and consumption of wood and non-wood forest products. It is also responsible for promoting sustainable mountain development and watershed management,

The posts are located in the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, NFO to support the Mountain Partnership Products (MPP) initiative and the Coalition of Fragile Ecosystems. The Secretariat acts as a networking and liaison point for members, connecting institutions and countries for activities in sustainable mountain development to ensure advancement of the mountain agenda at any level. It is also engaged in raising awareness globally about the importance of mountains and in advocating increased attention to sustainable mountain development. The Mountain Partnership Secretariat plays a facilitating role in helping members build and develop joint activities, mobilize resources, promote closer collaboration and achieve better results for sustainable mountain development.

The purpose of this Call for Expression of Interest is to provide FAO with a list of qualified candidates to support and enhance its

program of work. Assignments pursuant to this Call for Expression of Interest may be at the Organization’s headquarters in

Rome (Italy), home based, or on field missions, as required.

The Organization frequently engages experts to work on short-term projects as international consultants. The functions of a

consultant are results-oriented and normally involve analysing complex issues, directing seminars or training courses, preparing documents for conferences and meetings, or writing reports on matters within their area of expertise.

An international consultant is engaged by the Organization to provide expertise, skills or knowledge for the performance of a specific task or piece of work, which would be short-term by nature. The assignment may involve full-time or part-time functions similar to those of staff members.

The assignment can be from 1 month up to 11 months. The possibility of further extension is subject to satisfactory performance and depending on the resources and needs of the Organization.

The purpose of this call is to attract talents with experience and background in the area of marketing of products produced in remote mountain areas and small island developing States

Reporting Lines

The incumbent(s) will be working under the direct supervision of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat coordinator in collaboration with the Mountain Partnership Secretariat team.

Technical Focus

The incumbent(s) will contribute to the implementation of FAO’s Strategic Framework linked mainly to Resilient Agri-Food Systems (BL4) and Biodiversity and ecosystem services for food and agriculture (BE3). Specifically the Mountain Partnership Secretariat is looking for international consultants with experience and working knowledge on thematic areas related to:

  • Marketing strategies for high quality agricultural products produced in mountain areas and small island developing States
  • Capacity development to strengthen local producer organizations and/or create cooperatives to access broader markets
  • Agribusiness
  • E-commerce
  • Blockchain technology for agriculture

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance to the Mountain Partnership Products (MPP) initiative and the Coalition of Fragile Ecosystems in the field of value chain development, marketing and innovation;
  • Provide technical assistance to strengthen value chains and identify commercial development strategies and tools for producers’ organizations in mountain regions and Small Island Developing States;
  • Assist small-scale producer organizations in developing and implementing marketing strategies and business plans

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree in Business Administration, Economics, Agriculture, Sustainable Management of Natural Resources, International cooperation and development
  • At least 2 years for level C and 5 years for level B of relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: agribusiness, e-commerce, blockchain technology for agriculture
  • For consultants: working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two, or Arabic, Chinese, Russian. For PSAs, working knowledge of English or Spanish.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Relevant and demonstrated work experience in agribusiness sustainability and innovation, including participatory processes and social inclusion.
  • Relevant and demonstrated experience in marketing and commercial development of small-scale enterprises.
  • Relevant and demonstrated experience in training and other capacity development activities linked to agribusiness
  • Knowledge of the Mountain Partnership, the Mountain Partnership Products initiative and the Coalition of Fragile Ecosystems
  • Good presentation and writing skills
