The internship is located in the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology. Building on the work of the High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation and consultations of multi-stakeholder roundtable groups; the United Nations Secretary-General issued a Roadmap for Digital Cooperation (A/74/821) which addresses how the international community can better harness the opportunities presented by digital technologies while addressing their challenges. In the General Assembly declaration on the commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations (GA resolution 75/1), Member States recognized the importance of technology as a fundamental global issue and pledge to “improve digital cooperation” to be able to maximize the benefits digital technologies can bring while curtailing risks. Member States also agreed that “the United Nations can provide a platform for all stakeholders to participate in such deliberations.” In the Secretary-General’s Our Common Agenda report, the issue of digital technologies was also highlighted as a key priority, including the proposal for a Global Digital Compact as part of the Summit of the Future in 2023.
The Envoy was appointed by the Secretary-General to serve as a senior level advocate and focal point for digital cooperation, lead the implementation of the Secretary-General’s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation by coordinating the range of activities envisaged therein and working closely with various UN entities and multi-stakeholder groups, facilitate dialogue on the recommendations of the Roadmap as well as the digital-related elements of the Common Agenda to accelerate global digital cooperation, seizing on the opportunities that are presented by technology – while mitigating the risks – so that progress towards achieving the Goals by 2030 can be made collectively, as well as carry out other related duties and responsibilities assigned by the Secretary-General.
The intern will report to a Senior Programme Management Officer or a Programme Management Officer. Applications are on a rolling basis and internships should be for a minimum of 3 months.
The intern may be responsible for the following duties:
• Provides assistance in support of planning and implementation activities/processes.
• Assistance in drafting and preparing various documents, including presentations, videos, and written documents.
• Assists in researching, compiling, analysing, summarizing, and presenting basic information/data and trends on issues covered by the Secretary-General’s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation and Our Common Agenda.
• Assists in the coordination of programme/project planning and preparation; monitors status of programme/project proposals; takes necessary action to ensure project documents are completed and submitted to relevant parties for approval.
• Support Office activities, including public information and communications activities and organization of events and activities.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
To qualify for an internship under the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
1) Applications must meet one of the following educational requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above).
2) Be computer literate in standard software applications, and have familiarity with social media and communications tools;
3) Have a demonstrated and keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
4) Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Expertise and or/experience working on technology, particularly digital technology-related issues as outlined in the Secretary-General’s Roadmap and the Common Agenda, is desirable. Do you have any?
Skills/experience related to communications strategy, including social media applications, production of public information material and/or web design/graphic design skills are desirable. Do you have any?
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.
United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates will not be considered for employment with the United Nations if they have committed violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, or sexual harassment, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they have been involved in the commission of any of these acts. The term “sexual exploitation” means any actual or attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power, or trust, for sexual purposes, including, but not limited to, profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the sexual exploitation of another. The term “sexual abuse” means the actual or threatened physical intrusion of a sexual nature, whether by force or under unequal or coercive conditions. The term “sexual harassment” means any unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that might reasonably be expected or be perceived to cause offence or humiliation, when such conduct interferes with work, is made a condition of employment or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment, and when the gravity of the conduct warrants the termination of the perpetrator’s working relationship. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.

By accepting an offer of appointment, United Nations staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and assignment by him or her to any activities or offices of the United Nations in accordance with staff regulation 1.2 (c). In this context, all internationally recruited staff members shall be required to move periodically to discharge new functions within or across duty stations under conditions established by the Secretary-General.
