Fluency in Spanish and English (C1-C2 level). Additional languages would be an asset.
- Internships do not carry any expectation or entitlement to employment with UNHCR at the conclusion of the internship or at any time thereafter. Interns are not considered in any respect as a staff member of UNHCR. Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, positions in UNHCR during the period of internship and for a period of six months following the end of their internship. Interns may be hired as individual contractors without a break in service, provided they have the required qualifications and professional experience.
- An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, sister or brother is a UNHCR staff member, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.
- Interns are not remunerated but are entitled to receive a food and local transportation allowance.
- UNHCR is not responsible for the costs of travel, visas, accommodation, vaccines or living expenses associated to the internship.
- Interns are fully responsible for arranging medical insurance covering the full internship period.
- Only successfully screened candidates will be invited to sit a written test and to hold a personal interview.
- Due to the COVID19 situation, a mixed modality of telework and physical presence might need to be observed, and it might require adjustments during the internship period.

Background information/Organizational Context
UNHCR is the UN Refugee Agency dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. UNHCR has a presence in Spain since late 60¿s. The UNHCR Country Office in Spain deals with international protection issues and plays an active role in the asylum procedure. The Office advocates for the rights of refugees and asylum-seekers while promoting political, social and financial support for them.
Organizational Context
The Communications Department at the UNHCR Country Office in Spain counts on a team of three staff members and it is headed by the Spokesperson and Assistant Communications Officer, who supervises two main functions: public information and awareness.
The position
This position is primarily intended to provide Interns with the opportunity to undertake a work experience in the field of international protection and communications, linked to their university studies that could help them to provide guidance on their future careers. It is also meant to provide support to the work undertaken by the communications and external relations unit while acquiring experience on interaction and teamwork.
The intern will be supervised by a Communications Associate, who gives regular guidance and advice to the incumbent.
Duties and Responsibilities
¿ Daily monitoring of news related to migration and refugee issues in local, regional and national media, and communicate highlights to other UNHCR staff members.
¿ Analyse relevant media coverage of UNHCR and elaboration of regular reports
¿ Translations from English into Spanish
¿ Research and information gathering
¿ Drafting answers to content requests
¿ Assist with updating and administering various databases, including a shared content calendar
¿ Support in the development and implementation of projects, activities and campaigns
¿ Assist the team in identifying and drafting relevant content for social media channels
¿ Undertaking any other tasks assigned
The Intern will be trained and supported in his/her work.
Minimum qualifications required
¿ Be a recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization (i.e. Journalism, Communication, Political Science, International Relations, Translation and Interpreting or other fields related to them).
¿ Be available to work full time or part time (to be agreed) for a period between three and six months, Monday to Friday.
¿ Fluency in Spanish and English (C1-C2 level). Additional languages would be an asset.
¿ Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing.
¿ Have advanced experience using the Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint).
¿ Have excellent research and organizational skills.
¿ Have good inter-personal skills and be a keen team-player.
¿ Knowledge of graphic design programmes such as Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign is an asset.
¿ Knowledge of social media, content management systems or other web-based applications is an asset.
¿ Basic knowledge of photography is an asset.
