Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (www.rescue.org) is a world leader in relief, rehabilitation and post-conflict development services for those uprooted or affected by violent conflict and oppression. The IRC is currently working in over 40 countries around the world, addressing both the immediate and lifesaving needs of conflict affected people in emergencies and the reconstruction needs of post-conflict societies.

The IRC began programming in northern Uganda in 1998 in response to mass displacement and devastation wrought by rebel group, the Lord’s Resistance Army. In 2002, the IRC expanded to the remote, conflict-affected region of Karamoja. The IRC started supporting refugees and vulnerable individuals in Kampala in 2012, and was one of the first organizations to respond in 2016 at the onset of the South Sudanese refugee crisis. The IRC was also critical in helping respond in 2017 when Imvepi and Omugo settlements opened in Arua district and Palabek settlement opened in Lamwo district. In 2019, the IRC entered Tooro to support refugees while also providing epidemic preparedness and response services throughout the region. As of July 2020, the IRC reestablished presence in Kiryandongo settlement to provide primary health care services to the refugees.  In addition to emergency support, the IRC also invests in long-term stability for refugees and Ugandans through programs like immunization, family planning, legal services, women’s empowerment, education, and livelihoods. The IRC currently works in 16 districts, across 6 sub-regions in Uganda, including Acholi, Bunyoro, Kampala, Entebbe, Karamoja, Tooro and West Nile sub-regions.

Since mid-2019, the IRC has been leading a multi-year Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM)-funded protection and livelihoods project in Kampala, providing essential and lifesaving support to urban refugees and vulnerable host community. This project is implemented in consortium with Mercy Corps, Xavier Project, UGANET and Women International Peace Centre (WIPC).
