Mission and objectives

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. UN Women supports United Nations Member States in setting international standards for achieving gender equality and works with governments and civil society to formulate and enforce the laws, policies, programs and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and that they truly benefit women and girls around the world.

Context

UN Women is mandated by the UN Security Council to support UN system-wide coordination on the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, and to this end UN Women has been working with government, UN partners and civil society throughout the region to support women’s participation and influence at all levels of decision-making to prevent and resolve conflicts. UN Women Ethiopia Country Office works to support the Government of Ethiopia, civil society organizations and other stakeholders to implement the Women, Peace and Security agenda. It provides technical support to the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs in developing a National Action Plan on UNSCR 1325 and also other technical and capacity building support to government ministries, including the Ministry of Peace. UN Women works closely with civil society organizations working on peacebuilding, conflict resolutions and the WPS agenda through capacity building, programme support and awareness raising. As part of the UN Country Team in Ethiopia, UN Women seeks to mainstream gender in all peace, conflict and humanitarian issues.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist on Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: Contribute to the development of Programme Formulation and strategies in the area of Women, Peace and Security (WPS) - Support the development of background documents, concept notes, briefs, speeches and presentations related to WPS; - With support from the WPS-HA team, identify priorities and entry points for UN Wom-en in the area of Youth, Peace and Security; - Support in identifying strategic areas for intervention that focus on the peace and hu-manitarian nexus; Provide inputs to building partnerships, administer programmes and resource mobili-zation strategies - Provide inputs to projects proposals and other resource mobilization efforts; - Participate in coordination and planning meetings with stakeholders, donors and part-ners; - Support budget preparation, monitoring & evaluation and reporting on activities; - Assist the WPS-HA team in procurement of goods and services and other administra-tive tasks; Participate in advocacy, knowledge building and coordination efforts - Assist the WPS-HA team in organizing trainings, workshops and other events and support the secretariat; - Support the WPS-HA team in identifying and implementing capacity building interven-tions for stakeholders; - Assist UN Women team for the collection and documentation of lessons learned, good practices and innovative approaches and share with partners and key stakeholders; - Other related duties as required;
