Description
End-to-End Earth Observation Systems Engineer in the Invest Office, ɸ-lab Division, Future Systems Department, Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes (EOP).
You will work within the ɸ-lab Division and report to the Head of the Φ-lab Invest office (EOP-ΦLI). You will be responsible for providing technical, commercial, and programmatic support in assessing and managing co- funded activities for commercial Earth Observation (EO), in particular within the InCubed (Investing in Industrial
Innovation) Earth Watch programme element. You are a technical professional with (industrial) experience in EO space systems and applications and with additional expertise in evaluating commercial, financial and investment information, typically for the purpose of supporting entrepreneurial initiatives.
Duties
Prepare, evaluate and oversee development activities, executed by industry and research organisations of ESA Member States and managed technically by relevant ESA specialist staff, for the InCubed programme in the following domains:
Space segment, including ‘NewSpace’ approaches
Ground segment, such as data analytics, data distribution and access
EO data, applications and (value-added) services in the downstream industry, assuring that such activities meet the InCubed commercial criteria and that development priorities are set accordingly
- Facilitating synergies with ecosystem stakeholders such as InCubed alumni, other ESA programmes, private and public investors, end users/customers;
- Stimulating and supporting the development of ‘NewSpace’ solutions and systems for EO;
- Identifying and reporting to line management in a timely manner any risks and opportunities in the assigned activities;
- Critically reviewing the results of the activities and proactively promoting successful achievements;
- Supporting activities aimed at enhancing the understanding of the EO domain in a commercial context, including enablers and future trends;
- Prospecting for and evaluating emerging technologies, methodologies and techniques relevant for space/ground/user segments of “NewSpace” EO systems in cooperation with the EOP units;
- Ensuring coordination of EO technology developments and system architectures;
- Facilitating high-risk/high-potential developments based on co-funding and other financial risk mitigation arrangements;
- Liaising with counterparts in other ESA directorates to maximise the overall coherence of ESA activities and to promote and position InCubed within the space sector.

Education
A master's degree in engineering, physics or data science, preferably with further education in business development/management (e.g. Master's of Business Administration) is required for this post.
Additional requirements
You should have a strong background in Earth Observation with direct experience in the space industry.
