*Conditions of employment for external candidates: In conformity with existing ILO practice, the appointment of an external candidate will normally be made at the first step of this grade. The entry level salary for this position is 6,880.67 CHF monthly.

Introduction

 

The position is located in the Design Unit in the Publications Production Management Unit (PRODOC) within the Internal Services and Administration Department (INTSERV). INTSERV is responsible for the general management of facilities, property and inventory; safety and security; printing, publishing and distribution; diplomatic privileges; travel and transport, use of public spaces and general internal services. PRODOC is responsible for all aspects of design, editing/proofreading/quality control, production, internal/external printing and distribution of official documents and as well as for most publications at ILO headquarters.


The incumbent will perform the tasks of producing the graphic design components related to the ILO’s high impact publications, promotional material and events for both digital and printed formats, ensuring compliance with ILO branding guidelines and ILO communications department (DCOMM) strategy alignment.

 

The position will report to the Publishing and Design Team Lead.

Specific Duties

 

  • Research, analyze, conceptualize, creative graphic design and layout for publications, advertising materials, icons, posters, displays, banners, maps, graphs, charts, and photographic enhancement, corresponding to the author departments/unit's or editor's requirements.
  • Participate in work planning meetings within the unit and meet with technical departments to discuss various assignments and priorities.
  • Produce accessible compliant digital assets such as icons, visual identification, animations, interactive graphs, infographics and charts to enrich digital publications.
  • Prepare files intended for digital internal printing or external offset printing. Provide project managers with the necessary technical specifications for the appropriate execution of each job.
  • Perform quality control and branding compliance verification of final art for personal deliverables and external contractors’ propositions.
  • Design, compose and implement standardized and branded digital templates for ILO publications and catalogues.
  • Archive completed jobs on the unit's common server in accordance with the relevant classification criteria.
  • Provide technical specifications for design training needs and manage software user licenses related to graphic design. 
  • Keep up-to-date with knowledge and developments in technology and innovations in the graphic design and digital publications production fields.

Required qualifications

Education

 

Completion of secondary school or equivalent technical or commercial school.

Experience

 

Seven years of experience in the occupational area of which at least five years in the organization. Training in graphic design and graphic art. Some jobs may require a certificate or diploma in graphic arts or typesetting.
 

Languages

 


Excellent knowledge of one official language (English, French, Spanish) and a working knowledge of another.  


 

Competencies

 

In addition to the ILO core competencies, this position requires:

Demonstrated skills and proven ability to use higher level capabilities of DTP and graphics software to design and create original work for publications and promotional materials, including reproducing for web and E-book versions. Ability to keep abreast with developments in these areas. Excellent knowledge of document production and design procedures, processes and techniques, as well as of graphics software and desktop publishing applications. Good knowledge of the functions, processes and work programmes of the organization. Proven ability to negotiate design specifications and to provide design and productive services in a creative manner (good artistic and aesthetic sensibility). Ability to organise, supervise and manage work, to evaluate the quality of work of support staff and external service providers, to create original design work and to identify and resolve problems. A high degree of tact when dealing with both internal and external clients.  Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to demonstrate gender-sensitive and non-discriminatory behaviour and attitudes.
