The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies, and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking motivated and qualified candidates to fill two internship roles within the Deputy Director’s Office.

The position will be home-based until the pandemic-related restrictions are lifted. The internship will be for the period of three months from June – August 2022.

Brief description of the Context and Project:

The Supply Chain division recognises the power of using both internal data, and data from partners and other humanitarian actors to view problems and opportunities with precision, understand the impact small changes can have, and adjust the current strategy accordingly.  A project to evaluate WFP’s impact and effectiveness in Supply Chain has been initiated to harness the available data to determine our existing impact, and to translate this research into tangible outcomes to improve WFP’s impact and effectiveness of delivery mechanisms at country level.

Through our supply chain, US$2 billion has been spent in the countries where we operate, filling gaps in local supply chains wherever needed. The division is increasingly seeking to understand the organization’s impact on local economies, and how our strategies and practices (across the value chain including sourcing strategies, procurement from local economies, logistics) can be adapted and evolved to advance our dual mission and create sustainability in the communities we serve.

The interns will work with a small team within the Deputy Director’s office to support the implementation of the division’s new strategic roadmap, specifically the Evidence Generation and Partnerships enablers.

   Duties and responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the team lead Analytics, the candidate will perform the following duties:

• Support the data mining and analysis process, working with both primary and secondary data.

• Support the stakeholder management process, including engagement with academic institutions, International Financial Institutions, and other UN agencies.
• Assist with report writing and socialising of findings with key stakeholders.
• Other project related tasks.

Qualifications and experience:

Currently enrolled in a graduate programme and have attended classes in the past 12 months, or a recent graduate from a graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme). A background in economics, statistics, mathematics or international development is essential.

• Basic knowledge of data analysis
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
• Proficiency in the use of statistical software (R, Stata, SPSS)

Collaborative spirit with the ability to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures

• Outstanding organizational and time-management skills with an ability to plan, anticipate requirements, problems and obstacles, and an ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, and to work to tight deadlines
• Strong drive, self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of autonomy
• Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the UN World Food Programme
• Good communication and proofreading skills and ability to engage with various stakeholders from different sectors and backgrounds
• Adaptable and able to take on unexpected tasks
• Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the UN World Food Programme.

Working Languages

 Working knowledge of English (proficiency/level C) is required.

Supervision (Level/Methods of Supervision)

Under the direct supervision of the Team lead: Analytics, the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance, and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be elemental part of the supervision. With the support of a comprehensive induction package and assignment of a buddy/mentor, the intern will rapidly become a productive member of the team.

Learning Elements:

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:

• Have a greater understanding of the World Food Programme’s work and its role within the wider humanitarian system.
• Understand the work of the Supply Chain division and the end to end elements that enables our dual mission to save and change lives.
• Experience in undertaking complex data analysis that will inform strategy.

Terms and Conditions:

• Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1,000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
• WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
• WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
• WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
• Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers, or sisters.
