OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
The Global Education Monitoring Report (or GEM Report) is an editorially independent, authoritative, and evidence-based annual report that monitors progress in education in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were adopted as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Report is funded by a group of governments, multilateral agencies and foundations and published annually by UNESCO to serve the international community. It is widely recognised as an indispensable advocacy and technical tool supporting inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning for all.
Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Education, the overall guidance from the the GEM Report Director and the immediate supervision of the GEM Senior Policy Analyst (Monitoring Lead), the Associate project officer Research, will be responsible for developing and implementing a plan to update WIDE, liaise with the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and technical partners, ensure the supply of up-to-date information sources, manage the data, develop the code, estimate indicators and quality assure the results.
In particular, s/he will :
Long Description-
Coordinate the development of the World Inequality Database on Education website:
- Contribute ideas for the gradual improvement of the database, identifying areas in which the website needs to be strengthened,
- Develop an implementation plan with deadlines, aligned to GEM Report outputs and UNESCO Institute for Statistics data releases,
- Organize the collaboration with the UNESCO Institute for Statistics on data issues and quality assurance,
- Liaise with external technical providers supporting the development of the website.

Ensure that up to data sources inform the World Inequality Database on Education:
- Compile and manage databases, maintaining and developing the team's collection of household and school survey micro-data,
- Search actively and review critically all available household, student and school surveys with information relevant to education indicators to ensure the maximum number of countries are covered by recent data,
- Explore data quality and comparability.

Develop, update and assure the quality of the World Inequality Database on Education:
- Develop and integrate the code, document methods and produce metadata,
- Estimate inequality indicators by various individual characteristics,
- Assess the validity of results by comparing trends or external sources,
- Develop labels and other features that improve the user experience,
- Continuously test the functionality of website, respond to queries and fix errors.
EDUCATION
- Advanced university degree (Master degree or equivalent) in education, development studies, economics, sociology, social policy, or other related social science discipline.
WORK EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience as an analyst of survey data on education, of which preferably 1 year acquired at international level.
- Proven record of managing databases and developing estimation code.
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES
- Good ability to write clearly and concisely in English.
- Strong quantitative skills and knowledge of different research methods.
- Excellent skills in statistical software use (R and Stata) and database management.
- Ability to think critically and innovatively.
- Demonstrated capacity to work under tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills to represent the team and interact with external partners.
- Ability to maintain effective collegial relations in a multi-cultural setting and to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment.
LANGUAGE
- Excellent knowledge (written and spoken) of English.
LANGUAGES
- Knowledge of another official language of UNESCO (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).
