UNICEF Papua New Guinea is recruiting for a Child Protection Officer. This post is only open to nationals of Papua New Guinea. The Child Protection Officer provides professional technical, operational and administrative assistance throughout the programming process for child protection programmes/projects within the Country Programme from development planning to delivery of results. H/She prepares, executes, manages, and implements a variety of technical and administrative programme tasks to facilitate programme development, implementation, programme progress monitoring, evaluating and reporting.

With over 850 indigenous languages, and one of the most ethnically diverse populations, widespread poverty and gender inequality make it hard for many children to realize their rights.  In Papua New Guinea (PNG), UNICEF’s works effectively both ‘upstream’ (with governments) and ‘downstream’ (at the grassroots level) to carry out its mission through a programme of cooperation jointly developed with the government guides our work in the country. 

How can you make a difference? 

The Child Protection Officer provides professional technical, operational and administrative assistance throughout the programming process for child protection programmes/projects within the Country Programme from development planning to delivery of results. H/She prepares, executes, manages, and implements a variety of technical and administrative programme tasks to facilitate programme development, implementation, programme progress monitoring, evaluating and reporting. Specific key functions/accountabilities include:

1. Support to programme development and planning

2. Programme management, monitoring and delivery of results

3. Technical and operational support to programme implementation

4. Networking and partnership building

5. Innovation, knowledge management and capacity building

As a champion for every child, qualifications are…  

  • A post secondary degree in one of the following fields: international development, human rights, psychology, sociology, international law, or another relevant social science field.

  • A minimum of two years of professional experience in social development planning and management in child protection related areas.

One year relevant work experience is accepted if the candidate has a university degree or an advanced university degree.

  • Experience working in a developing country is considered as an asset.

  • Relevant experience in programme development in child protection related areas in a UN system agency or organization is considered as an asset.

  • Experience in both development and humanitarian contexts is an added advantage.

  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language or local language of the duty station is considered as an asset.

Appointments may also be subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid). Government employees that are considered for employment with UNICEF are normally required to resign from their government before taking up an assignment with UNICEF. UNICEF reserves the right to withdraw an offer of appointment, without compensation, if a visa or medical clearance is not obtained, or necessary inoculation requirements are not met, within a reasonable period for any reason.
