The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is an operational arm of the United Nations, supporting the successful implementation of its partners' peacebuilding, humanitarian and development projects around the world.  Mandated as a central resource of the United Nations, UNOPS provides sustainable project management, procurement and infrastructure services to a wide range of governments, donors and United Nations organisations.  With over 6,000 personnel spread across 80 countries, UNOPS offers its partners the logistical, technical and management knowledge they need, where they need it.  By implementing around 1,000 projects for our partners at any given time, UNOPS makes significant contributions to results on the ground, often in the most challenging environments.

Established in 2009, UNOPS Ethiopia Office has been providing services to various partners, including the government of Ethiopia, UN agencies including but not limited to WHO, UNHCR,UNECA,UNOCHA,UNIDO and WFP, and other international organizations such as but not limited to EU, KOICA,EOJ,IRC and Italian Government . In 2014, the UNOPS Executive Director decided to establish the UNOPS Ethiopia Operational Hub (ETMCO), which manages and coordinates the UNOPS activities in Ethiopia, as well as Sudan and Djibouti. 

UNOPS ETMCO activities range from tailor-made administration, operations, human resources and logistics support for implementation of development and humanitarian projects, infrastructure and procurement management services; and advisory services on effective procurement, supply and financial management as well as project and program  management. 

From 2016, ETMCO launched a strategy to position itself as the preferred partner of choice for development projects, increase visibility, balanced and growth, organizational development and increase operational excellence . As a part of this, ETMCO is embarking upon various infrastructure management projects across Ethiopia, Sudan and Djibouti with a variety of donors and partners. These projects range from provision of advisory and transactional services to facilitate construction of various structures, from roads to hospitals, and from power plants to industrial zones. All of these projects and their sub-projects will be implemented in partnership with the Government of Ethiopia, Sudan and Djibouti, as well as other international and non-governmental organizations in the county.


Functional Responsibilities

Driving Functions

  •  Ensures provision of reliable and secure driving services by a) driving office vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel and delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items and b) meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport.
  • Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs for the preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.
  • Ensures proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes, car washing, etc.
  • Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts.
  • Ensures that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents.

Messenger Functions

  • Ensures prompt and accurate delivery of mails to all UN agencies, multilateral, bilateral, embassies and consular, government and non-governmental agencies/organizations operating from Addis Ababa. Delivers documents to the courier companies and other locations as required.
  • Takes care of office documents for protocol clearance, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, other government agencies, Embassies and other international organizations operating from Addis Ababa. Also collects all documents destined to UNOPS ETMCO.
  • Assists on clerical work in the office when not performing messenger and driving functions. Specifically, She/he binds documents destined to the UNOPS ETMCO and other partners, and ensures that documents for filing are well arranged for easy tracking by the Support Service / Operation Staff.
  • He/She performs any other functions as determined by the Supervisor and Head of Support Services in Addis Ababa.

Results Expected:

  • The key result is accurate, safe and timely execution of the UNOPS office services
  • Timely execution of delivery functions;
  • Proactive follow-up on protocol issues with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other partners and government agencies;
  • Client satisfaction based on feedback against performance and measurements;
  • The office car always in good and serviceable condition.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

a. Education
  • Secondary Education completion certificate is required.
  • A Technical Diploma in Automotive is an added advantage.

b. Work Experience

  • A minimum  of two (2) years of working as a driver of civilian vehicles is required.
  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repairs areas is an added advantage.
c. Certifications
  • A valid driver’s license with minimum 3rd grade level is required.

d. Language:

  • Fluency in spoken and written English and the local language (Amharic) is required
