THE ROLE AND ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

 

The Private Partnerships and Fundraising Division (PPF) is responsible for engaging the private sector (corporations, individuals, foundations) through high-impact partnerships in support of WFP's strategic priorities, and through individual giving to build and retain support from the general public worldwide. PPF has embarked on an exceptionally ambitious new strategy 2020-2025 to raise an additional one billion dollars for hungry or malnourished people and to expand the contribution to WFP from the business sector through effective and sustainable long-term partnerships as well as from private individual supporters around the world. This includes securing new high impact technical partnerships, signing significant new corporate deals and growing existing relationships as well as building a base of one million individual supporters. Our strategy and ambition are based on need. WFP was reaching more than 90 million people in 83 countries and we now know that we will be called on to reach many millions more as a result of the pandemic. 

 

Joining PPF is an exciting opportunity for experienced professionals to co-develop and implement our new private partnerships and fundraising strategy.

 

PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

 

You will be responsible for driving the global business development and fundraising strategy , with corporations specifically.  You will lead a team of two/ three and provide strategic guidance to the wider team, who execute the fundraising strategy by proactively identifying targets for WFP, building a prospect pipeline and developing successful approaches to secure new multi-year, multi-million corporate partners. 

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

 

You will primarily be responsible for:

 

  • Leading and managing a team of Business Development Officers and associates, providing coaching, training and guidance to support the delivery of their workplans, enable high performance and ensure appropriate development.
  • Identifying and prospecting high value partnerships with the corporate sector: work collaboratively as part of the Business Development team to selectively identify, research and screen target corporates, then develop successful approaches for potential new partners including relationship and network mapping.
  • Creating and establishing new processes to ensure successful execution of the BD strategy, contributing the setting up and implementation of fluid and efficient processes (which involve other teams within the division, technical units and other divisions, like Legal, Regional Bureaus (RBs)and Country Offices (COs),)
  • Creating a target orientated BD environment, within the division- including RBs and COs.
  • Collaborating with the PPF Technical Unit Focal points and WFP's Programme experts to build new 'products' which unlock high value financial and technical contributions. 
  • Negotiate complex partnerships with corporate prospects through the creation of compelling value propositions, key messages, presentations and briefing, which align with WFP priorities.
  • Monitoring and reporting upon progress against KPIs for prospect pipeline under direct responsibility. 
  • Ensuring smooth partnership handover of secured relationships from BD to Partnership Management team, depending on area of responsibility.
  • Strategically and systematically planning the outreach to prospects: supporting WFP to utilise external awareness events to drive business development/fundraising opportunities: support global events (such as conferences, forums, panels and roundtables) convening multinational corporates to position WFP as a ‘go to’ organization for partnership; provide inputs for Private Sector Partnerships leadership team to grow WFP’s presence at events and transform WFP into “go to” brand for new fundraising partners.
  • Prepare strategic briefs for senior leadership meetings.
  • Liaise on due diligence process & contracting: Liaise with PPF Global Services team on due diligence process and contracting.
  • Gather and share partner intelligence (including forecasting), using key information systems (e.g. WINGS, Salesforce, WFPGo), and asses results. 
  • Take responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives in all areas of work to ensure equal participation of women and men.

QUALIFICATIONS AND KEY REQUIREMENTS

 

EDUCATION: 

 

You have:

 

  • Advanced University degree in Political Science, International Development, Development Economics, International Relations, Law, Marketing, Communications or other relevant fields, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or training/courses.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

 

You have:

 

  • Minimum five years of relevant professional work experience in business development or sales roles, securing multi-million, multi-year partnerships and providing inputs to design and develop solutions with prospective partners. 
  • 1-2 years of experience in managing a team. 

 

LANGUAGE:

 

You have:

 

  • Fluency (level C) in the English language. 
  • Intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official UN language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or Portuguese (A WFP’s working language)

 

MORE ABOUT YOU

 

You have:

 

  • Good understanding of private sector priorities and gained experience in developing multi-stakeholder partnerships.
  • Strong influencing skills and confidence to engage with high-level stakeholders including C-suite.
  • Designed and managed all resource mobilization processes and resource strategies, negotiated contract terms, and provided resourcing advice to seniors. 
  • Used understanding of partner’s focus areas and knowledge of internal capabilities to create a Unique Value Proposition for the partners.
  • Gained experience in using technology and digital tools for data collection, analysis, and shared data-based insights to add value to all partnerships. 
  • Work effectively in a multi-cultural environment and international organization.

 

ADDITIONAL / NICE-TO-HAVE REQUIREMENTS

 

You have:

 

  • A network of contacts in the private sector which you will leverage for success in this role.
  • An understanding or appreciation for working in a large, complex, hierarchical, decentralised and geographically dispersed organisation.
  • Familiarity with WFP and the UN system will be regarded as an asset.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

 

Mobility is and continues to be, a core contractual requirement in WFP. The selected candidate will be employed on a fixed-term as well as a rotational contract with a probationary period of one year.

 

WFP offers an attractive compensation and benefits package in line with ICSC standards (http://icsc.un.org) including basic salary, post adjustment, relocation entitlement, visa, travel and shipment allowances, 30 days’ annual leave, home leave, an education grant for dependent children, a pension plan, and medical insurance.

 

The selected candidate will be required to relocate to Rome, Italy to take up this assignment.
