The UNICEF East and South Africa Regional Office (ESARO), through effective support to country offices and strategic engagement with partners, contributes to winning support for the cause of children from decision makers and the wider public particularly on priority issues in the region. Anchored in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF strategies for change are aimed to yield concrete results for children, charting a course towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 – and the realization of a better world for every child. UNICEF engages with the private sector at all levels, including small and medium enterprises, multinational corporations, government institutions, industry bodies and multi-stakeholder platforms to respect and support children’s rights across business operations, practices, and communities. The purpose of this internship is to gain exposure and provide support to the strategic workings of the UNICEF Private Sector Engagement in the Eastern and Southern Africa region. The intern will work for a 6-month period and provide critical support, input and coordination to specific initiatives which aim to highlight and position UNICEF work with private sector, particularly business, internally and externally. This internship will also provide the successful candidate an exposure to the working environment of a multilateral organization and a better understanding of UNICEF’s mandate to safeguard the rights of every child, everywhere.

How can you make a difference?

Under the guidance and supervision of her/his supervisor, the intern will : 

  • Support knowledge management activities relevant to private sector engagement, including the documentation of good examples in engaging with the private sector strategically aligned with the prorgamme priorities at their country offices.
  • Support internal and external communications on private sector engagement activities and strategies jointly with the communications team at the regional office utilizing various channels such as websites, social media and SharePoint collaboration sites.
  • Supporting the production of advocacy documents targeted to business audience on key topics such as ESG, climate change, Child Rights and Business issues, etc.
  • Prepare briefings, one-pagers and presentation materials as needed
  • Support the engagement with a particular industry (to be defined) with relevant UNCIEF colleagues such as extractives, ICT, agribusiness, etc.
  • Support other activities related to business engagement and capacity building initiatives needed/requested by the Corporate Alliances Specialist.

  • Understanding of how to engage with business to accelerate outcomes for children
  • Improving understanding of UNICEF’s activities, policies and organization
  • Improving organization, communication and coordination skills

To qualify as an advocate for every child you must…

  • Be enrolled in a graduate degree programme or have graduated within the past two years in business, marketing, corporate social responsibility, sustainaiblity, economics or similar discipline. Applications should be supported by the latest academic transcript or graduation certificate or reference letter from an academic supervisor.
  • Be able and willing to take on the internship remotely on a full-time basis for the internship duration.
  • Be fluent in English. Knowledge of a second United Nations an asset (Some countries in the region have Portuguese and French as their official language).
  • Have strong analytical and writing abilities, attention to detail and familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Have strong communication skills, written English skills, and ability to write clearly, succinctly and for a variety of audiences.
  • Have interest in UNICEF mandate and its work on business issues and human rights.
  • Any relevant work or volunteer experience particularly in Africa will be considered an asset.

Remarks:

STIPEND

In accordance with UNICEF's guidelines, all interns must receive a stipend, and in the case of this internship the full stipend shall be covered by the partner institution. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may take up to 2.5 days per month off work for any reason, including for medical reasons. The stipend will be reduced for any absence beyond this quota. The quota is cumulative over the duration of the internship, but there will be no compensation or carry-over to another appointment for unused leave days at the end of the internship.

INSURANCE

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern's service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrollment in a health/accident plan prior to start his/her work. If accepted, the intern will be required to provide a copy of health insurance coverage and to fill out the relevant UNICEF forms on conditions regarding service as an intern.
