ABOUT WFP

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

This job is based in Addis Ababa WFP Country Office. Job holders report directly to the International Staff Counsellor. This job requires regular or on short-notice traveling to Area/Sub/Field offices.  

JOB PURPOSE

There is a crucial need to provide counsel and guidance to staff at this critical period where WFP Ethiopia staff and particularly field-based staff are faced with traumatic situations for some and very stressful situations for most the others because of the socio-economic situation and hardship facing the population and them indirectly through their relatives.

To provide efficient and effective psychological counselling to staff requiring support related to work-place difficulties or personal issues. A large emphasis is placed on extensive engagement with staff and promotion of staff well-being.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

•    Provide counseling support services to WFP staff and if needed to their dependents; this may include case management and referral to other resources as required 
•    Provide counseling services to individuals and/or groups during emergencies, provide services in a timely & sensitive manner to staff and dependents after critical incidents and ensure proper follow-up. 
•    Plan regular field visits and provide visit reports upon return to duty station 
•    Provide induction course to staff newly recruited 
•    Plan and facilitate a support session for the Hotline team on a regular basis 
•    Based on data trends and requests from other divisions/units/offices and under the supervision of the international counsellor, develop and provide a range of training and programs including but not limited to team building, resilience, harassment, and cross-cultural sensitivity to improve morale, health, and team dynamics that promote staff wellbeing 
•    Identify and liaise with high-quality local mental health resources that can be used for referrals or in times of crisis. Ensure proper follow-up when a staff member is referred. 
•    Prepare a monthly report on the activities conducted including statistical data. 
•    Maintain the highest ethical standards related to the provision of psychological services; 
•    Other as required.

TECHNICAL SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:

The candidate should hold active licensure/registration as a mental health professional with a recognized governing association and be a member of that organization in good standing. Additional training or certification in a broad range of related fields, such as alcohol/substance abuse, resilience, cross-cultural communication, conflict resolution, mediation, trauma etc. will be an advantage 

OTHER SPECIFIC JOB REQUIREMENTS

•    Broad knowledge of all facets of the field of counselling and ability to provide an environment in which others can talk confidentially and act without fear of repercussions within a climate of established trust. 
•    Excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentations) including the ability to defend and explain difficult issues and positions to the staff at all levels. 
•    Ability to identify clients' needs and suggest appropriate solutions. 
•    Ability to establish and maintain productive partnerships with clients. 
•    Ability to contribute to the strategic vision of the Wellness division based on trends identified using a population health model. 
•    An excellent team player and value working with a multidisciplinary and cross-culturally diverse team.  
•    Very good working knowledge of technology tools such as PowerPoint, Excel and Word. 

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Advanced university degree in Clinical or Counselling Psychology, Sociology, with at least 2 years professional work experience in a related field OR a university degree with at least 6 years of relevant work experience in the related field.
                                               Experience in hardship duty stations providing counselling services to staff working in difficult and hazardous environments is required.

Knowledge & Skills:

• Specialist expertise in the assessment of mental health needs and the assessment of risk.
• Broad knowledge of all facets of counselling services and demonstrated skills to create a trusted environment in which others can talk confidentially.
• Ability to manage crisis situations which involve diverse actors and stakeholders.
• Ability to identify clients’ needs and suggest appropriate solutions.
• Excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentation).
• Conflict resolution and mediation skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with people of both genders and diverse national and cultural backgrounds.
• Skills in designing and delivering trainings/information sessions on a number of subjects and ability to adapt those to different audiences.

Language: Fluency in oral and written communication in English and Amharic is required. Fluency in other local language is an added advantage.
