Job Overview: The International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City provides wrap-around services for over 150 refugee youth who have been in the country up to two years. The College and Career Readiness (CCR) program provides one-on-one academic and career counseling for high school aged refugee youth, as well as skill building workshops on a variety of topics: financial literacy, career exposure, digital skills, job readiness, etc. With support from the CCR Specialist, the CCR Support Staff provides weekly individualized advising sessions around goal setting, education/career planning, and social-emotional skill development, as well as assist with CCR monthly skill building workshops. CCR Support Staff will model appropriate behavior and engagement related to school and the workplace, build supportive relationships with youth, and act as positive role model to youth. Pending COVID Safety Protocols, CCR Support Staff will participate virtually and/or in-person in CCR workshops, activities, and field trips.

Major Responsibilities include but not limited to:

·       Work with CCR Specialist to support the needs of youth by forming positive, healthy, and empowering relationships with students.

·       Guide youth through career goal setting and planning.

·       Assist youth in applying for post-secondary education and employment opportunities such as college applications, job applications, scholarships/FAFSA, etc.

·       Support students through social and emotional learning engagements.

·       Provide follow-up and intervention support if youth are not maintaining necessary attendance and progress at school.

·       Track youth involvement and participation, including dates and lengths of meetings.

·       Attend CCR workshops and events to assist with interpretation and comprehension.

·       Model appropriate behavior and engagement in the program.

·       Participate in all training sessions and commit to biweekly collaborative meetings with the CCR Specialist

·       Assist with transportation, as needed.

·       Communicate student needs to the CCR Specialist

Requirements:

This position requires a great deal of dependability, flexibility, and excellent communication/people skills.

·       Committed to at least 6 months working 10-15 hours per week, flexible weekly schedule that includes evenings and weekends.

·       Minimum age for this position is 18.

·       IRC background check required, driving history report (as needed).

·       Ability to drive is preferred but not a requirement, in which case must have a valid driver’s license and auto insurance.

  • High school diploma strongly preferred.

Work Experience:

·       Refugee background or experience working with refugees preferred, as well as previous experience with youth & education is helpful.

Demonstrated Skills & Competencies:

  • Cultural sensitivity: ability to build trust with clients, colleagues, and partners.
  • Proficient in English, both spoken and written.

·       Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; Second language proficiency in relevant language highly desired: Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Dari, Arabic, Burmese, French, etc.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy in work product.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office).

Working Environment:

  • A combination of standard office environment, remote work, and ‘field’ time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities.
  • May require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
