OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

 

Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Culture, the general supervision of the Chief of the Living Heritage Entity and the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist in charge of the Statutory Support Team within the Programme Management Unit of that Entity, the Contractor shall assist the Secretariat in finalizing the global reflection on the listing mechanisms under the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (hereinafter called  the 2003 Convention), following Decisions 13.COM 6, 13.COM 10, 14.COM 14 and 16.COM 14 adopted by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (hereinafter called  the Committee). Following a meeting of experts (May 2021), a three-part meeting of the Open-ended intergovernmental working group (hereinafter called the working group) in July and September 2021 as well as April 2022, the global reflection is foreseen to continue in 2022 with the extraordinary session of the Committee to be organized in June/July 2022 and until the ninth session of the General Assembly (5 to 7 July 2022) in order to discuss revisions to the Operational Directives.

 

The incumbent shall more concretely assist in:   

Long Description
  • collecting and organizing information for the preparation of information and working documents to be developed as part of the global reflection on the listing mechanisms and to support the work of the governing bodies of the Convention in the implementation and reform of the listing mechanisms;  

 

  • logistically organizing and contributing to the logistical organization of the fifth extraordinary session of the Committee and ninth session of the General Assembly with regards to the outcomes of the global reflection, in collaboration with the Communications, Cities and Events Unit (CLT/CCE);

 

  • preparing templates and formatting and, when appropriate, disseminating correspondence, technical notes, documents, scenarios and presentations, as well as entering information in the database of the 2003 Convention necessary for the preparation of webpages of the meetings, and ensuring the publication of information and working documents in English and French;

  • informally translating correspondence and documents from either French/English into the other language and assist in the parallel reading to check linguistic coherence between these two languages for documents and correspondence related to the reflection of the listing mechanisms under the 2003 Convention; responding to queries from relevant stakeholders in particular experts, States Parties, Committee members and UNESCO colleagues within and outside the Entity regarding the reflection process;

               

  • liaising with Administrative Unit (CLT/AO) for the preparation and monitoring of obligations relating to the meetings and other activities undertaken to support the reflection process;

 

  • contribute in carrying out tasks necessary to close the reflection process including the archiving of documents, revising the forms related to the listing mechanisms of the 2003 Convention, updating the webpage dedicated to the reflection;

 

  • any other tasks as requested to support the work of the Programme Management Unit.

Education

  • Minimum requirement: Completed secondary, technical or vocational education.

 

Work experience

  • A Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in supporting programmes and projects in fields related to culture.

 

Skills and competencies

  • Very good knowledge of office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.).
  • Ability to manage information objectively, accurately and confidentially.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work schedules and priorities according to workload, emergencies and deadlines.
  • Ability to design, work and execute tasks independently with thoroughness, care and method.

  • Excellent knowledge (written and spoken) of English and/or French and very good knowledge of the other language.

  • Relevant professional experience in UN System or at the international level.

  • Knowledge of another/other official UNESCO language(s) (Spanish, Russian, Chinese and/or Arabic) is an asset.
