  1. Purpose of the Vacancy Notice

The purpose of this vacancy is to develop a list of qualified candidates for inclusion in this advertised roster. All applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of their application (whether successful or unsuccessful) upon conclusion of the selection process. Successful candidates will be placed on the roster and subsequently may be selected for consultancy assignments falling in this area of work or for similar requirements/tasks/deliverables. Inclusion in the Roster does not guarantee selection to a consultant contract. There is no commitment on either side.

  1. Purpose of consultancy

The Graphic Designer will support the Regional Communications Manager and the Programme to produce key communications products and other health emergencies in the African region

  1. Background

The AFRO Communications objectives are to lead the development of the corporate communications plan, drive prioritization and right size effort with expected impact for WHO; position WHO as the authoritative and trusted voice on health at the global level through working with technical departments to develop strategies to amplify WHO's normative work; lead WHO media outreach, incl. crisis/ emergency communication with input from technical departments as well as across the Region; drive all communication to the general public as well as responding to media enquiries; lead on global advocacy (e.g. health campaigns, public health information, donor visibility for resource mobilization); provide digital production capacity & expertise to support the organization in the African Region.

  1. Deliverables
  • Design themes, Layouts, contents, covers of documents, social media cards, social media gifs, posters and infographics.
  • Development of figures, including, fonts, graphics and layout, and resulting materials such as, brochures, reports, banners, posters, and booklets and update and revision of existing publications, materials and graphics.
  • Creation of brochures, publications, information folders, publications, and other similar promotional materials.
  • Preparation of printing packages (all layout and design files) for printing of publications and other communication products (banners, posters, booklets, leaflets, books, calendars, bulletins and flyers
  • Deliver creative and innovative ideas for print, web and interactive presentations. This will require the graphic designer to provide technical solutions for use of new media.
  • Any other duties to support the Communications Team as and when required.

  1. Qualifications, experience, skills and languages

Educational Qualifications:

Essential: A first-level university degree in Industrial Art, Graphic Design or diploma on completion of training course on professional graphic design.

Desirable: Training in creating and editing audiovisual assets including videos and working in a public health setting.

Experience

  • Essential: Minimum 5 years of experience working as a graphic designer in a multicultural, international environment;
  • Desirable: Experience in producing designs for the United Nations, governments or international non-profits or advocacy campaigns will be an advantage and creating content for social media platforms, apps, corporate presentations, newsletters, websites and digital publications.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Technical expertise in the creation of graphic design content for broadcast media and social media channels.
  • Strong graphic design skills, including the mastery of all standard design software included in the Adobe Creative Suite;
  • Proven ability to create graphic design content for different audiences and channels.
  • Knowledge of the latest graphic design technology and software.
  • Knowledge of WHO's mandate, goals and work, including an understanding of public health issues

    1. Remuneration: Payband level - Band A
      • Daily rate: USD 274 – 349 (depending on candidate educational and professional background)
      • Monthly rate: USD 5,480 – 6,980 (depending on candidate educational and professional background).
    1. Living expenses (A living expense is payable to on-site consultants who are internationally recruited):
