Head of Global Outreach and Engagement

Overview

CIFOR-ICRAF is seeking a new Head of Global Outreach and Engagement to drive CIFOR-ICRAF´s ambitious global outreach and engagement activities and act as a key contributor to one of the world’s leading science communications programs. The lead works across the organization with senior management and researchers and with high level donor and partners worldwide. They are responsible for coordinating a team of editors and communications/media relations officers within the Communications, Outreach and Engagement team and regional communications teams in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Duties and responsibilities

Editorial:
  1. Lead the development, implementation and monitoring of communications strategies to build CIFOR-ICRAF global positioning, enhance resource mobilization and maximize the policy and development impact of its research globally.
  2. Provide strategic direction and high-level coordination to ensure all institutional and project deliverables are met.
  3. Responsible for CIFOR-ICRAF´s news sites (i.e. Forest News, Agroforestry World News), overseeing a team of editors and writers and ensuring quality output;
  4. Identify opportunities, develop and implement plans to promote CIFOR-ICRAF through targeted outreach and engagement activities;
  5. Lead regular editorial meetings;
  6. Represent CIFOR-ICRAF at major events where appropriate (i.e. speaking and moderating roles) to maximize its external visibility.

Resource mobilization
  1. Lead communications liaison with resource mobilization;
  2. Ensure donors and partners are acknowledged in all projects;
  3. Conduct targeted outreach to donors and partners in coordination with resource mobilization and senior management.

Media Relations:
  1. Lead the development and oversee the implementation of a high impact media relations strategy, including coordinating external support where appropriate (i.e. media/PR agencies)
  2. Monitor global media topics of relevance to CIFOR-ICRAF and identify areas for thought-leadership;
  3. Establish strong media relations;
  4. Lead media enquiries and other engagements;
  5. Report on results.

Management and budget responsibilities:
  1. Lead regional communications networks in Asia, Africa and Latin America
  2. Develop annual and monthly plans guiding outreach and engagement activities;
  3. Management project communications and budgets as assigned;
  4. Build the capacity of the communications team and scientists worldwide for effective outreach, resource mobilization and policy engagement;
  5. Quality control of the outreach and engagement staff´s and consultants’ outputs;
  6. Support the ongoing development of the CIFOR-ICRAF brand and ensure it is managed externally in a way that conveys its mission and values
  7. Identify needs for external consultancies, draft ToR´s and manage the selection / on-boarding process;
  8. Manage the Communications, Outreach and Engagement budget and ensure deliverables are met on time, within budget and high quality;
  9. Communications deliverables (i.e. donor reports)are met on time and according to budget;
  10. Review and analysis of performance data on a monthly basis to guide the strategy, and revise as required.


Education, knowledge and experience

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in international relations, communications, journalism, or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of professional work experience in a fast-paced, dynamic communications environment, preferably at the international level and with a science focus;
  • Well versed in using different communications tools and techniques, with a clear focus on targeting stakeholders effectively and achieving measurable impact;
  • A strong writer, preferably with journalism experience, that can develop compelling content for a wide variety of needs.
  • Track record in producing and overseeing the production of exceptional content;
  • Sound understanding of how traditional media and social media work and what it takes to pitch content successfully;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with demanding internal and external counterparts in parallel;
  • Experience in planning, implementing and overseeing complex communication activities;
  • Experience in monitoring progress and evaluating impact of communication activities;
  • Experience in working for a research facility or within the development sector is an advantage;
  • Fluency in English at native level is essential; other languages (esp. French, Spanish, Indonesian) an advantage.

Terms and conditions

  • This is a Globally Recruited Staff (GRS) position. CIFOR-ICRAF offers competitive remuneration in USD, commensurate with skills and experience.
  • The appointment will be for one year, inclusive of a six-month probationary period, with the possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of the position and available resources.
