Mission and objectives

The Institute generates policy-relevant analysis by applying a gender lens to inform the development, implementation and evaluation of health programmes. UNU-IIGH also supports capacity development of local decision-makers and stakeholders to engage effectively with global health challenges within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 1. To generate recommendations and build consensus on key global health issues through the convening of policy dialogues with member states, UN agencies and other key stakeholders 2. To undertake translation and dissemination of global guidance and recommendations in global health priority areas to make them relevant for country-level decision-makers 3. To support the implementation of global guidance through expert briefings, advice and training 4. To develop analytical tools to inform the development of implementation and evaluation of gender mainstreaming tools in health programming 5. To review the evidence and generate new knowledge in approaches to addressing gender inequalities in health and health outcomes 6. To strengthen capacity for local decision making through South-South learning and fostering engagement between academics, professional associations, researchers, civil society and policymakers 7. To develop knowledge products to inform global policy and best practice across health in the SDGs

Context

UNU-IIGH is one of 14 research and training centres that comprise the UNU system. As a UN think tank, the mission of UNU-IIGH is to build knowledge and capacity for decision-making by UN agencies, programmes, and member states about global health issues. The aim is to contribute to the development and strengthening of health services policy frameworks and management actions, particularly for people in developing countries, and to support implementation of promotive and preventive approaches to human health. UNU-IIGH’s research and capacity building in global health relates specifically to informing the policy debates and directions that ensure that in keeping with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) “no one is left behind”. UNU-IIGH recognises the need to communicate its research and findings to the policy-making community, including those within the UN, researchers and international organisations. In particular, we seek to communicate our work with people and organisations in the Global South. The material to be designed will be used for the Decolonising Global Health project (contributing to SDG 3), which offers an opportunity to improve the global health system by catalysing equitable shifts in power and new forms of global health practice that are better tailored to the needs and contexts of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and marginalised population groups. The website will aim to be a one-stop stop for everything "Decolonising Global Health" on a digital level and will house resources for stakeholders to consume and engage with.
