Mission and objectives

Iraq as a post-conflict country has been suffering from instability for decades which has been hindering the implementation of the national development agenda. The root causes of this situation are linked to economic and social problems among individuals, groups and institutions. Therefore, the development challenges the project seeks to address are linked to two main interlinked areas; Economic Development and Social Capital / Social Cohesion. Post-IS, attention turns to (1) rebuilding of communities and stabilization of liberated areas and (2) developing a sound basis for long term sustainable economic and social development of the country. With relevance for both, above all, with the conclusion of military operations against IS and the successful restoration of territorial control by the Government of Iraq, Iraq has now a renewed opportunity to build an inclusive and accountable political system – such that serves all communities, regions and beliefs, preserves the country’s diversity, and

Context

UNDP is currently working on a project to support the Iraqi government in implementing and monitoring the sustainable development goals. During this project, it conducts several activities, studies and reports that support the government in accelerating the achievement of sustainable development goals, monitoring gaps, and analyzing data. Among the activities carried out by the project is a report on the SDGs financial gap assessment in Iraq.
