What we do
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
Your role
As a paediatric nurse, you are an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, you promote and ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care aiming to achieve national/international standards depending on the context. You work on building capacity in nursing care and infection control in ICRC assisted or independent hospital structures with often limited resources and in challenging environments.
- Provides high-quality care, often in a limited resource setting, to admitted patients, following the ICRC Nursing Guidelines and international guidelines and in collaboration with other members of the surgical team
- Participates in the delivery of a programme of training/coaching to measurably improve the provision of high-quality patient care
- Promotes a clean and safe patient environment and ensures that ICRC hygiene standards are regularly measured and maintained (sterilization and infection control and safety regarding the handling of sharps, fire safety, waste management, etc…)
- Ensures accurate data collection through the timely completion and filing of all patient/structure related documents
- Participates effectively in the team and medical structures preparedness & response to emergencies
- Develops a dialogue which demonstrates a strong understanding of the need to cooperate with and support both internal and external counterparts
- Ensures a rational use of resources available and reordering of supplies. Ensures the appropriate use and maintenance of equipment
- May supervise certain resident nursing and hospital support staff
Your profile : Education and experience required
- Strongly motivated by humanitarian work
- University degree in Nursing (with a minimum of a 3 years course)
- Specialization in paediatrics or a minimum of 5 years experience in paediatrics
- Registered paediatric nurse with a valid license to practice in the country of residence
- Minimum 2 years experiences post-speciality in hospital posting
- At ease with pre and post-operative care
- Very good English and French verbal and written communication skills
- Able to work under pressure and lead a multicultural team in a complex environment
- Previous International experience in Humanitarian and/or Development in low-resource settings (NGO’s, IO or charity organizations)
- Good communication skills, capacity to manage and work within a multidisciplinary team
- Positive, flexible and able to adapt to harsh living conditions and/or unstable security environment
- Previous experience within the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and asset
Our operational context
- In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC dœs not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals
- Our field staff members must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to departure in the field
- Our field staff members are prepared to accept unaccompanied postings (i.e. no spouse, partner, children or dependents)
- In line with our security guidelines, our staff members must hold a manual driving license
