About the Role

We are looking for a professional to join our team as a Field Research Specialist in Bahir Dar Ethiopia. You will manage the field team and coordinate the field activities. You will also support in implementing the MEL surveys and you will report to the Senior Ethiopia MEL Specialist.

Responsibilities

Lead on Field Team management

  • Oversee the implementation of all the field surveys
  • Provide direct management to the MEL field manager, who is in charge of more than 10 field supervisors and 70 enumerators
  • Oversee hiring and professional development of the field team
  • Create training materials focused on improving survey execution
  • Coordinate the field team meetings to discuss progress in survey execution
  • Work with the field manager to identify field challenges and offer possible solutions
  • Undertake periodic Performance Development Review of Field staff
  • Collaborate with the Human Resource Unit to manage contracts, payments for the field staff and processing of the field-related expenses
  • Maintain all documentation and field related records

Lead on Survey Management

  • Oversee the field team goals and weekly plans
  • Coordinate acquisition of the sampling lists from the relevant kebeles
  • Work with Field Supervisors to pretest surveys in the study sites
  • Provide all communication on survey implementation to the department and country leadership

Support in study design and department strategy development

  • Support the Senior Ethiopia MEL Specialist in preparing survey materials
  • Work with the Senior Ethiopia MEL Specialist to develop department calendars, setting timelines for the surveys and follow up to ensure adherence to timelines
  • Support the Senior MEL Specialist to monitor back checks and assess data quality
  • Manage special learning projects

Qualifications

Across all roles, these are the general qualifications we look for. For this role specifically, you will have:

  • 3+ years experience in field team management.
  • 1+ years experience in coordination of complex surveys across different OAF operational sites
  • Strong communication skills, as you will interact with farmers, field team members, peers and the leadership team
  • Experience in MEL survey operations
  • Quantitative and qualitative data collection skills
  • Knowledge of electronic data collection tools (e.g. ODK, Kobo, Survey CTO, Commcare) and ability to maintain complex spreadsheets.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Monitoring and evaluation, Project management, Agroforestry, Natural Resource Management or Agricultural related field
  • Problem solving skills
  • Fluency in English and Amharic
  • Willingness to spend a long time in the rural program implementation sites and to take public transportation when necessary
