Background Information - Job-specific

The successful candidate will work for the European Union (EU) Trust Fund Feeder Roads project whose main objectives are to improve feeder roads network and rural infrastructure; to enhance social cohesion of communities and to promote gender equality across the focus areas; and to improve food systems efficiency and  increased household incomes of target vulnerable populations. The project aims to build synergies and capitalize on the achievements of previous and ongoing EU-funded interventions in Warrap, and Northern and Western Bahr El Ghazal states in South Sudan, where rural infrastructure has  been developed with funding from the EU. The project will draw lessons from other EU-funded projects such as the South Sudan Rural Development program (SORUDEV), Rural Development: Strengthening Smallholders' Resilience (SORUDEV SSR), and Zonal Effort for Agricultural Transformation - Bahr el Ghazal Effort for Agricultural Development (ZEAT BEAD). 

Functional Responsibilities

The Project Management Support Senior Assistant - Surveyor will report to the Lead Civil Engineer and work with other project team members. He or she will:

  • Check and verify all benchmarks and principal setting out points to be used in the setting out of the works;

  • Check and verify the setting out of the works by contractor;

  • Carry out all necessary surveys for the calculation of the quantities of the completed works and proper handling of the survey data submitted by the contractor;

  • Check and verify that the alignments and levels of the works are in line with the design;

  • Bring to the immediate attention of the Lead Civil Engineer any issues or matters that may adversely affect the quality, time and/or economic performance of the works;

  • Conduct an engineering survey for the selected road, structures and civil works, including a topographic survey and record all site related details;

  • Ensure surveying equipment is in good working order;

  • Report on all matters pertinent to his or her duties to the Lead Civil Engineer;

  • Maintain day to day survey records with appropriate format developed;

  • Perform any other duties as requested by the Lead Civil Engineer.

Monitoring and Progress Controls

  • Ability and commitment to carry out tasks assigned by the Lead Civil Engineer;

  • Document and report recorded survey data;

  • Attend weekly meeting with the Lead Civil Engineer and report the progress of work;

  • Ad-hoc and regular communication with the Lead Civil Engineer and Project Manager regarding work plan and activities;

  • Timely and accurate submission of final surveying report of project sites.

Final Product

  • Requested tasks are delivered in a timely, efficient manner and according to UNOPS procedures to meet project requirements;

  • From time to time, develop personal capacity to independently undertake relevant tasks assigned by the Lead Civil Engineer.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education
  • Secondary School Certificate with additional six (6) years of relevant work experience is required OR

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Surveying or Engineering or other related field with additional two (2) years OR

  • Masters Degree is an added advantage;

  • Relevant certificates or training related to surveying a distinct advantage.

Work Experience 

  • Minimum six (6) years’ relevant work experience in surveying road construction works is required;

  • Experience as a quantity surveyor in a large scale road construction project desired;

  • Experience in use Surveying equipment including dumpy level, Total station, GPS RTK, recording data and preparing survey reports is an asset;

  • Experience in drafting using AutoCAD and Quantity Surveying is an added advantage;

  • Field work experience in fragile environments like South Sudan is desirable.

Language Requirement

  • Fluency in written and oral English is required;

  • Knowledge of local Arabic and or local languages is desired.
