Position: Education and Learning Management Intern

Reports to: Education & Learning Manager

Start Date: September 2022

Duration: At least 3-4 months, candidates that can do a full academic year preferred

Hours: Minimum 15 hours per week, preference to candidates seeking more hours. This is an unpaid internship.


Each year the IRC in New York provides support to refugee, asylee and other humanitarian entrants seeking to start new lives in the New York City area.  The IRC in New York aims to help these clients achieve self-sufficiency and adapt to and become engaged citizens of their new communities. The Education & Learning unit strives to serve the entire family unit, and the need all family members have for access to relevant educational opportunities to thrive in the U.S.   


The IRC NY Education and Learning Management intern will work directly under the supervision of the Education and Learning Manager. This person will support overseeing the implementation different IRC’s education and learning-focused programming, including programs for children, youth, and adults in the New York area.  

Essential Job Function

Adult programs (75%)
Oversee the enrollment of adult students and in English classes in the IRC NY office.
Oversee the follow-up on attendance for adult English classes.
Support other interns in maintaining timely databases on the different tracking systems
Support writing reports for grant deliverables.
Manage special projects as assigned
Attend weekly supervision meetings with the Education & Learning Manager

Youth programs (25%)
Assist with pre-program preparations and day to day operations and management of the Newcomers Youth Summer Academy (NYSA)
Facilitate communication between the Summer Academy site and IRC-NY main offices
Support logistics of NYSA program and special events
Manage special projects as assigned

Learning Objectives

Experience working with refugee populations soon after they arrive in the US
Learn about the refugee resettlement process in NYC
Build communication and outreach skills with different stakeholders
Learn about the various management responsibilities of a complex educational program.
Learn how to create workflows that ensure staff support and productivity.
Learn how to communicate essential messages to internal and external audiences.
