Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you an experienced mechanical technician with a passion for cutting-edge technology and precision assemblies? Then seize this opportunity and join CERN’s Experimental Physics (EP) Department, where you will take part in the development and construction of the next generation of particle detectors.

The CERN ATLAS Team plays a major role in the construction of the future silicon ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk). In particular, the CERN team focuses on the development of the Pixel Outer Barrel. These activities include the design, prototyping and assembly of the support structures as well as the final detector integration and testing.

Functions

As a mechanical technician in the CERN ATLAS Detector Team, you will join the Tracker section (EP-ADE-TK). Your functions in the construction of the ATLAS ITk Pixel Outer Barrel will include:

  • Manufacture parts and tooling using both conventional and CNC machines.
  • Participate in the production and assembly of the support structures and the cooling pipework.
  • Perform and document quality control tests for detector components and assemblies, including dimensional metrology and mechanical tests; Take part in the analysis of the test results and the implementation of corrective measures when needed.
  • Participate in the final detector integration, including installation of services and piping.
  • Collaborate in the design and development of new parts, tools and assembly procedures.

Qualifications

Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of precision mechanics or a related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in precision machining of metallic and non-metallic parts using both conventional and computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines.
  • Demonstrated experience in CAD-CAM programming (preferably using WORKNC) and in the operation of 3, 4 and 5 axis CNC machines.
  • Good understanding of mechanical design drawings and tolerance specifications.
  • Demonstrated experience in the assembly of high precision mechanical systems.
  • Proven experience in dimensional metrology, including the operation of coordinate measuring equipment.

Experience in the following areas would be considered an asset:

  • Experience in the use of CAD software (ideally Catia V5) for the 2D and 3D modelling.
  • Hands-on experience manufacturing, machining and testing fibre-reinforced composite materials and structures.
  • Hands-on experience with of structural joining techniques, particularly adhesive bonding.

Technical competencies:

  • Manufacturing of mechanical parts
  • Programming and use of CNC machine-tools and machining centres.
  • Precision assembly of mechanical structures and equipment.
  • Knowledge and application of conventional dimensional metrology.
  • Production of 2D drawings and 3D models (ISO dimensioning, tolerancing).

Behavioural competencies:

  • Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations; being rigorous and producing quality results at first attempt.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
  • Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
  • Solving problems: adopting a pragmatic approach; understanding the value of adopting generic rather than 'gold -plated' technical solutions; producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements.
  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting; using time efficiently and effectively.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French (basic knowledge of the other language would be an asset, or undertaking to acquire it rapidly).
