Job Overview:  

Under the supervision of the Education Program Manager, the Community Navigation & Adult Education Coordinator (CNAE) will provide cohesive support for newly arrived refugee and new American adults learning to navigate their community, move towards their educational goals, and meaningfully engage in positive integration. This includes management of ongoing Cultural Orientation (CO) training to refugee and new Americans with the goals of providing the information necessary for them to successfully navigate available services, their local community, and broader US society and to promote cross-cultural understanding while encouraging clients’ positive psychosocial adjustment. The CNAE will also coordinate career readiness intake and individualized career development plans with resettled adults; address common barriers to equitable access of educational opportunities (e.g. childcare); and strengthening community partnerships in Salt Lake County to support educational access, specifically for English language acquisition, advanced education, and/or technical training. They will develop and implement educational programming that focuses on life and livelihood skill-building while developing strategic partnerships to expand access to training and resources outside of IRC SLC’s capacity and mission focus.

Major Responsibilities

     Establish and maintain collaborative, outcomes-driven, and cohesive educational support for newly arrived refugee and new American adults.

     Work with clients to identify education and career pathways based on their educational, experience, and interests in individualized development plans in coordination with IRC SLC’s employment services program that help lead adults to a degree or credentials necessary for pursuing their goals.

     Coordinate CO trainings including the dissemination of the ongoing training schedule to clients, staff, and external partners, secure in-person interpretation, and prepare training materials and classroom logistics.

     Provide supervision to direct service staff, specifically the Education Program Refugee Community Liaison, by providing ongoing individual supervision, coaching and goal setting, managing workload, and helping staff troubleshoot challenges.

     Supervise, support and regularly communicate with volunteers, AmeriCorps members and interns to carry out youth program services.

     Coordinate a continuum of adult education referrals internal and external to IRC SLC, including job readiness training, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, financial literacy and coaching, health promotion and access, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship courses.

     Work with the Education Program Manager to prepare regular reports for program funders and provide input to IRC in Salt Lake City strategic planning and fund development processes related to adult education.

     Collaborate with IRC team members locally and nationally on best adult education practices and programmatic issues.

     Participate in all staff meetings, trainings, office support, reception coverage and other duties as assigned.  

Job Requirements:

·       Undergraduate degree required.

·       At least three years of professional experience with not-for-profit and/or adult education or equivalent work experience.

·       At least 2 years of experience supervising staff preferred.

·       Excellent English written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills.

·       Strong relationship building, diplomacy, and networking skills; ability to effectively build internal and external relationships.

·       Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.

·       Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research, and problem-solving purposes.

·       Ability to be flexible and work well under pressure in a fast-paced team environment.

·       Previous multi-cultural experience and proven ability to communicate well with people from diverse backgrounds strongly preferred.

·       Ability to lift 35+ lbs. safely.

·       Valid driver's license and access to a personal, insured vehicle.

Working Environment: 

  • Standard office environment with regular participation in community outreach and events. 
  • May require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
