Desertification, along with climate change and the loss of biodiversity were identified as the greatest challenges to sustainable development during the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Established in 1994, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the sole legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management. The Convention seeks to support countries to address Desertification, Land Degradation, and Drought (DLDD). (www.unccd.int )
The G20 (or Group of Twenty) is the annual international forum for the governments from 19 industrialized countries and the European Union (EU). Collectively, the G20 economies account for around 90 percent of the gross world product (GWP), 75 percent of world trade, two-thirds of the world population, and approximately half of the world’s land area. In 2020, Saudi Araba held the rotating Presidency of the G20. The G20 Leaders’ Declaration, issued on Sunday, 22 November 2020, launched a "Global Initiative on Reducing Land Degradation and Enhancing Conservation of Terrestrial Habitats”. Building on existing initiatives and on a voluntary basis, the G20 countries share the ambition to achieve a 50 percent reduction in the amount of degraded land by 2040.
The Global Initiative (GI) with oversight from UNCCD, will focus on capacity building, engaging the private sector and civil society and showcasing success. Working with youth, women and the indigenous community will all be key to the success of the project. The Director, under the oversight of the Executive Secretary of the UNCCD, manages the Initiative Coordination Office (ICO).
The Programme Officer (Stakeholder Engagement) will report to the Director of the Global Initiative.
Within delegated authority, the main responsibility of the incumbent is to lead, advise and support the Stakeholder Engagement plans and activities of the Initiative:
• Coordinate the development of an overall strategy for regular and structured engagement with key stakeholders to implement the mandate of the Global Initiative.
• Identify partner institutions who can support the Initiative to implement the Stakeholder Engagement strategy.
• Develop training packages for the UNCCD G20 team in working with various stakeholders for successful implementation of the Initiative.
• Prepare regular reports of the Stakeholder Engagement strategy for the Director and the Steering Committee.
• Conduct periodic monitoring of the activities of the implementing partners and conduct review meetings.
• Represent the G20 Global Initiative on Land in various international events and relating fora to relevant stakeholders.
• Carry out specific activities for the various stakeholders as explained in the following sections:
• Finalize individual engagement strategy for each stakeholder based on external and internal consultations.
• Work with partners to implement the individual engagement strategies, including participating in key events.
• Develop specific capacity building programmes for various stakeholders to increase their awareness on sustainable land management.
• Develop detailed terms of references for implementing partners for private sector engagement and steer it through the administrative process.
• Identify potential opportunities for synergy, including resource mobilization from private sector, so as to increase outreach and effectiveness of the G20 Global Initiative on the private sector.
• Organize major international fora for the private sector on promoting the sustainable land management agenda.
• Develop detailed terms of reference for implementing partners for youth engagement, including through technical and social hackathons, and steer it through the administrative process.
• Lead the UN-G20 leadership programme targeting young leaders to give solid foundations on sustainable development.
• Develop campaigns to work with youth groups on promoting the sustainable land management agenda.
• Develop detailed terms of reference for implementing partners for gender engagement and steer it through the administrative process.
• Develop specific capacity building programmes on gender to increase awareness on sustainable land management and its linkages to gender.
• Develop campaigns to work with gender groups on promoting the sustainable land management agenda.
• Capture traditional knowledge of indigenous communities in a systematic manner and assess it with modern scientific framework to produce holistic guidance on restoration.
• Develop campaigns to work with indigenous groups on promoting the sustainable land management agenda.
• Harness knowledge and wisdom on sustainable land management from various faith streams and work with the communication team to target messages.
• Develop campaigns to work with faith groups on promoting the sustainable land management agenda.
• Perform any other job-related activity required to achieve the goals and objectives of the Global Initiative and its office.

Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in science, management, law, communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in stakeholder engagement is required.
Experience in project management, contracting with partners, and supervising them is required.
Experience in drafting official reports and documents is required.
Experience with crafting and leading advocacy activities aimed at policy influence and adoption at the international level is desirable.
Experience working in an international context or multilateral institution, planning and organizing events and/or conferences, designing and conducting training programs and drafting terms of reference, and supervising is desirable.
For this position, fluency in English language is required. Knowledge of another UN official language would be an advantageAssessment

Appointment against this post is for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
