Mission and objectives

UNITAD is the Investigative Team mandated by Security Council resolution 2379 (2017) to support domestic efforts to hold ISIL (Da’esh) accountable their crimes by collecting, preserving, and storing evidence in Iraq of acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide committed by the terrorist group ISIL (Da’esh) in Iraq. Reflecting the global impact and reach of ISIL terrorist activities, as well as its extensive recruitment of foreign terrorist fighters, the Council has also requested the Special Adviser and Head of UNITAD to promote throughout the world, accountability for acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide committed by ISIL, and work with survivors to ensure their interests in achieving accountability are fully recognized. In further recognition of the global nature of ISIL crimes, the Council underlined that another Member State in whose territory ISIL has committed acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide, may request the Investigative Team to collect evidence of such acts, but only with the approval of the Security Council. UNITAD is based in Baghdad, Republic of Iraq. Based on the mandate established pursuant to Security Council resolution 2379 (2017) and the Terms of Reference regarding the activities of the Investigative Team in Iraq, as approved by the Security Council on 13 February 2018, UNITAD engages, inter alia, in the following activities: • Collection of a broad range of existing documentary, digital and testimonial evidence, obtained from actors including Iraqi national authorities, other national governments, victims and witness groups, civil society bodies and international and regional organizations;


o As an active UNITAD team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to UNITAD and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including: o Daily and periodical media monitoring for media trends in Iraq and internationally pertaining to Da’esh/ISIL. o Draft media and social media content about the organization’s activities and important events. o Manage social media platforms and apply modifications to the website in consultation with Public Information Officer. o Content and record management of the Public Information Office’s important correspondences, documents, financial records, and audiovisual content. o Manage physical assets, branded material, and printings as per Public Information Officer’s guidance. o Act as a focal point along with the national Associate Public Information Officer for the Public Information Office. o Take minutes and report on department meetings to the Public Information Officer. o Draft department reports and social media analytics reports. o Work with contractors on content creation as per Public Information Officer’s guidance. o Conduct research and outreach with national and international journalists. o Draft content for publications and printings. o Conduct tasks as per Public Information Officer’s requests. o Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment o A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed

Task description

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Public Information Officer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Associate Public Information Officer will: • Support the Public Information Office in implementing the communications strategy, and implementation of communications campaigns; • Prepare a diverse range of information communications products in support of campaign initiatives in close coordination with the Public Information Officer; • Draft complex material for UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and articles in print and multimedia formats in English and Arabic; • Prepare material for press briefings, and interviews; draft press statements and press releases as necessary in English and Arabic; • Draft and edit materials in both English and Arabic languages, such as key messages, Q&A, talking points, media lines, and importantly to digital media platforms, including for the website and the social media; • Conduct continuous maintenance of the website back and front end. • Analyze social/digital media platforms to increase the Mission’s visibility and assist in the drafting of the Mission’s communications strategy for social/digital media platforms; • Monitor and analyze media and social media platforms for latest events, developments and trends, and provide frequent analysis of the public mood and reactions to the mission’s statements and activities as well as observations and recommendations to the Public Information Officer; • Participate in the development and implementation of a strategy for media relations, publications, community outreach and/or radio products with the objective of promoting awareness, understanding, support and appreciation for the Mission’s work and activities; • Any other related duties as may be required
