ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT

The International Development Law Organization (IDLO) enables governments, empowers people, and strengthens institutions to realise justice and promote peace and sustainable development. IDLO is the only global intergovernmental organisation exclusively devoted to promoting the rule of law and access to justice.

With its headquarters in Rome, Italy, a Branch Office in The Hague, Permanent Observer Missions to the United Nations in New York and Geneva, and 18 Country Offices across the globe, IDLO carries out policy advocacy, research, and the rule of law and justice programmes, operating in every region of the world. 

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK)

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) is Kenya’s premier bar association, with the membership of all practising advocates currently numbering over seventeen thousand members. It has the mandate to advise and assist members of the legal profession, the government and the larger public in all matters relating to the administration of justice in Kenya. The Assignment

Under the supervision of the IDLO Kenya Country Manager and the LSK, the Experts will facilitate the following areas;

Expert One

  • Legal and policy framework on environmental law.
  • Vulnerabilities and inequalities contribute to and are exacerbated by climate change and mitigation for the same.

Expert Two

  • The rule of law Approaches to Natural Resources Management and Climate Change
  • Natural Resources Management in the Devolved System of Government

Deliverables

  • The Experts shall deliver the following outputs based on timelines to be agreed on with IDLO in the initial briefing meeting:
  • An Inception Report detailing the understanding of the terms of reference and a proposed methodology, a work plan indicating clear milestones and timelines., to be delivered within three days of contract start.
  • Submit a detailed research paper on their respective presentations three days after the training.
  • A summarised report of training proceedings, highlighting agreed action points.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The selected Expert will possess the following qualifications and experience.

  • Hold a Bachelor of Law, Environmental Studies/Science, and post-graduate qualifications in law is an added advantage.
  • Demonstrate in-depth experience in legal and policy frameworks in Environment and Climate Change fields.
  • At least seven years of experience in teaching, training, and other capacity-building initiatives within the Environment and Climate Change field.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of the rule of law and general law-making processes in Kenya at the policy and planning level and implementation level.
  • Possess a strong work ethic characterised by the desire to achieve results. Strong problem-solving skills, with a high degree of a personal and professional organisation.
  • Ability to multi-task in a high-pressure environment, respond rapidly to ad hoc requests, meet tight deadlines, and ensure diplomacy and tact when engaging with prominent public figures.
  • Ability to work independently and flexibly to deliver the agreed outputs and respond to feedback promptly and professionally.
  • Computer savvy, able to navigate necessary programs with proficiency.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including strong writing and presentation skills in the English language.
  • High levels of integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality.

Remuneration 

Lumpsum for performing all tasks and services and producing deliverables, all fees are subject to a 5% withholding tax.
