Search for information on chemical pollution in recreative waters in Portugal
Mission and objectives
Surfrider Foundation Europe is an environmental not-for-profit organisation which “aims at defending, saving, promoting and managing in a sustainable manner the ocean, the coastline, waves and the people who enjoy them”. Surfrider Foundation Europe's European network of grassroots chapters and affiliates, volunteer to protect and preserve coastal resources. Chapters mobilize the public on issues that affect their communities through direct action organizing that result in real, immediate and concrete improvements in the coastal environment.
The aim is to underline the importance of studying chemical pollution of bathing and recreational waters, and to motivate European decision makers to include this parameter in the new version of the Bathing Water Directive of 2023.
In the context of the upcoming revision of the European Bathing Water Directive, Surfrider Foundation Europe is working on the development of a European map on which are indicated the cases of chemical pollution of bathing areas and recreative waters since 2006. It is a big work of research on the Internet but also of collection of testimonies. If it was easy to find information on cases of chemical pollution in France or in Spain, we are struggling to find cases for other European countries. Your mission would be to do this bibliographical research for the water masses in Portugal. The goal is to find as many cases as possible in order to complete the map. For each case of chemical pollution identified, we retrieve the following data (when the information is not available, we note "NC"): - the date of the chemical pollution on the bathing area/water activity (e.g.: an oil slick was spotted on a beach on XX/XX/2010) - the nature and cause of the chemical spill (e.g. oil released during a fire on a boat) - the impact on the environment and human health (e.g. - red patches on bathers - XXX dead fish) - the solutions brought (ex: - the city council organized a cleaning of the beaches, - XXX filed a complaint against XXX) We thank you very much for your precious help
