International Consultant for verification and proofreading the Russian translation of the National Referral Mechanism Handbook (SSA)

Background:

 

The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) is the principal institution of the OSCE responsible for the human dimension. The ODIHR’s activities are implemented in 57 participating States in accordance with the ODIHR’s political mandate. The ODIHR has a large number of assistance projects in the areas of democratic institution building, the rule of law and human rights, as well as election observation.


ODIHR has a firm commitment to making its resources available to as wide an audience as possible, throughout the OSCE region. To this end, the Office seeks to publish high-quality Russian translation of the National Referral Mechanism Handbook. To ensure the quality standards and style of the OSCE, the translation process includes Russian language proofreading and verification with a professional external consultant.

 

Duration of Assignment:

 

60 working days in the period from mid August – mid October (ca. 226 200 words for verification and proofreading)


 

Tasks and Responsibilities:

 

Under the supervision of the ODIHR Editor, the consultant will perform the following tasks:

 

  1. Verifying the accuracy of the translation and making corrections where necessary and proofreading the text as a whole;
  2. Making grammatical and stylistic corrections;
  3. Correcting spelling errors and other typographical mistakes;
  4. Removing unnecessary spaces in the text;
  5. Checking and correcting the information contained in footnotes, as well as ensuring that the footnotes are properly formatted;
  6. Verifying and correcting the table of contents to ensure that it matches the actual contents of the publication;
  7. Proof-reading the final laid-out version of the publication.
  8. Any other editorial-type corrections, as agreed upon with ODIHR’s editor.


Deliverables:

At the end of the contract the consultant will provide ODIHR with a fully verified Russian text which incorporates OSCE style, and is consistent with ODIHR’s terminology, including gender-mainstreaming efforts, and accurately reflects the English-language original. 

 

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Minimum of six years of experience in translation and editing;
  • Excellent knowledge of Russian; 
  • Excellent command of English;
  • Ability to work independently under time constraints;
  • Familiarity with the thematic areas of ODIHR activities in the field of human rights would be an asset;
  • Previous experience with OSCE or other international organizations would be an asset.

 

Remuneration Package:

Remuneration will be based on the selected consultant's/expert's qualifications, experience, the tasks and deliverables for this position and in accordance with the OSCE established rates.
