Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Placing women’s rights at the centre of its efforts, UN Women is mandated to lead and coordinate United Nations’ system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming are translated into action. It is also mandated to provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

The Intergovernmental Processes & Inter-Agency Coordination Unit in UN WOMEN India Country Office (ICO) plays a central role to deliver on UN Women’s normative support functions and strengthens linkages between normative work and operational activities. It contributes to the Entity’s support for the development and strengthening of a comprehensive set of global norms, policies and standards on gender equality and women’s empowerment that is dynamic, responds to new and emerging issues, challenges and opportunities and is applied through action by Governments and other stakeholders at all levels. The Unit also has special responsibility for the coordination of substantive servicing of intergovernmental and expert bodies as mandated in relevant legislative documents.

UN Women supports the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, in promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women and girls, as part of its Strategic Plan. UN Women in India partners with State Governments and State institutions and civil society organisations to ensure that all women enjoy their rights to health, education, protection, participation and non-discrimination. UN Women is the Ministry of Women and Child Development’s (MWCD) partner for the promotion of the women’s agenda during India’s Presidency of G20, starting in December 2022.

Within the current country programme, UN Women has initiated several initiatives to document the programmes it supports through multimedia content. Compelling written stories, case studies turned into multimedia content will be used across multiple international and national platforms, forums and media to draw the public’s attention to achievement of women-related milestones, with a particular focus on achievements in India’s Aspirational Districts.

For this purpose, UN Women India is seeking 2 professional Written Documentation Specialists to document the concept, existence and stories of Aspirational Districts for the duration of 30 Days. The selected materials will be used for MWCD-UN Women joint advocacy and communication objectives of India’s Presidency of G20 and other national and international public outreach.

The contractors shall provide UN Women India with written stories and case studies on the strides made by women as beneficiaries of the GoI Aspirational Districts Programme under the framework of Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of Women-led Development.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Contractors will be expected to deliver any of the following as required during the whole duration of the contract:

  • Compelling written stories on progress made by women in the Aspirational Districts of India across multiple socio-economic indicators as well as justice and leadership parameters;
  • Customization of written stories for social media dissemination;
  • Visualise the narration of the written stories and support the videographer/photographer in direction;
  • Coordinate with the videographer/photographer to document all story aspects;
  • Script written stories into script format for short videos;
  • Visualise and script one main video - introduction of Aspirational Districts and an amalgamation of all stories in an interesting format;
  • Provide English subtitles for all stories;
  • Clearly identify location, name and age of interviewees, quotes and any relevant details.

Expected Deliverables:

  • Preparation of the Aspirational Districts Profile in the form of district-level data on SDGs and a comprehensive Statement of Key Development Challenges, Solutions and Development Innovations at Work in the District - 27 August 2022 - 20% payment;
  • Documentation of Twenty 800-wordstories of change across, but not limiting to : Clean Energy, Climate Action, and Green Development (2) Technology for All; One Health; Meeting the SDGs; Innovative financing solutions; Digital empowerment; Education; Women-led enterprises - 10 stories by 30 September 2022 – 15% payment ; 10 stories by 15 September 2022 – 15% payment;
  • Customised Social Media content from the documented stories - 20 (one SM content piece for each story) - quotes, short human-interest video stories, short video scripts, insights, data – 22 September 2022 – 30% payment; 
  • Script and story flow for one main 3-minute video on Aspirational Districts – 29 September 2022 – 10% payment; 
  • English subtitles for all stories, videos – 4 October 2022 – 10% payment.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent in media and communication, political or gender studies, social sciences or related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience of feature writing for the mainstream news media; 3 years of experience in strategic written storytelling for international development organizations;
  • Demonstrable experience of working with high-impact international media and evidence of high success rate in placement of content in the international and national media;
  • Experience in covering social, humanitarian and development subjects will be an asset;
  • The Contractors are expected to deliver each component of the work plan electronically;
  • Experience with UN Women and /or other UN agencies and INGOs will be an asset.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English and Hindi.

Evaluation and Selection Criteria

Criteria for shortlisting of CVs will be based on the following assessment:

  • Required Degree and Qualification (5 points);
  • Expertise and Experience relevant to the assignment (10 points);
  • Demonstrable experience of working with high-impact international media and evidence of high success rate in placement of content in the international and national media; Experience in covering social, humanitarian and development subjects will be an asset (5 points).

The evaluation process for selection of the candidate will be based on the following assessment:

  • Writing Samples Assessment (40 points)
  • Interview (60 points)
