ACAPS is looking for a Climate Change Expert to join its analysis team as soon as possible. This cross cutting position will strengthen ACAPS’ incorporation and understanding of climate change both within analytical products and for capacity building across the organisation.  
We are looking for a registered consultant who can commit for about 170 days. The position is remote. 

Purpose of the position 

ACAPS aims at strengthening the understanding of the intersection between climate change and humanitarian impacts in pre-existing humanitarian crises as well as emerging situations. This position will strengthen ACAPS’ incorporation and understanding of climate change both within analytical products and for capacity building across the organisation. This is a cross cutting position that will help improve and tailor existing analytical products as well as create new products aiming at informing humanitarian decision makers. Therefore, this role will support ACAPS in publishing profile reports on countries vulnerable to disaster risk and integrating climate indicators into ACAPS products. This will ultimately promote ACAPS as being perceived as a leading voice on humanitarian needs analysis.

Role and responsibilities

Generic responsibilities: 

  1. Standardise the in-house workflow on production of climate change analysis  
  2. Build internal capacity
  3. Lead and/or support the development of prototype analytical reports
  4. Support climate change analysis to individual teams upon request
  5. Strengthen relationship with key partners

Specific responsibilities: 

  1. Development of ACAPS strategic direction regarding climate change analysis
  • Identification of climate-focused indicators to integrate into the core humanitarian dataset and the regular CrisisInSight products.
  • Provision of technical advice to the development of ACAPS products
  • Streamline workflows to best incorporate climate change analysis across the organisation
  • Contribute to at least 3 ACAPS analytical products
  1. Capacity building
  • Identify key areas to strengthen on climate change analysis
  • Collaborate with individual teams and training unit to ensure all teams and hubs build capacity around inclusion of climate change within analysis
  1. Identify key stakeholders
  • Proactively search for opportunities for external collaboration, including fora, on climate change, in particular to promote dialogue respond to current challenge of DRR bridging development and humanitarian responses.
  • Contribute towards learning and innovation within ACAPS
  • Other relevant duties, as assigned

Critical interfaces:

Closely coordinates and collaborates with the Analysis Coordinator, all ACAPS teams and hubs, the Training unit, and the Quality and Learning unit.

Competencies

Qualifications and experience

  • Master’s degree, preferably in climate change, environmental science, disaster risk reduction, or any other related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree with an additional 2 years’ experience will be accepted instead.
  • At least 5 years of experience on climate change related analysis and research.
  • Proven high level of technical expertise in climate change and/or disaster risk reduction.
  • Experience working in the humanitarian sector desirable.
  • Proficiency in English, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in an additional language is desirable.

Professional competencies

  • High analytical thinking and good understanding of the principles of qualitative and quantitative data and information analysis.
  • Proficient in climate change related analysis and research.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Understanding of the humanitarian sector and emergency response context is a plus.
